Mk3 Leon electric steering issue?

Hi from a newbie,
We have a 2016 Leon for which has a weird issue with the steering. Whilst on the motorway the other day I was driving in a straight line and the steering wheel started to feel really notchy. Hard to explain but it almost felt like I was fighting to keep it in a straight line? Been to seat today and they told me that if your driving in a straight line for a while then the electric power steering motor shuts down slightly to save power and this is normal.
Is this correct or am I getting fobbed off?
Doesn't feel right to me but then this is the first car I've had with electric steering
Thanks, kev

I've never felt anything like that, and the dealers explanation sounds a bit iffy to me!

Does sound iffy, can't see a safety system like the steering shutting down when the car Is in motion

Do you have lane departure assist? Might be that 'trying' to be helpful

That's what I thought. Steering wheel was really notchy though in a straight line. It runs on 18inch wheels so I thought maybe that had something to do with it but can't see that really either. Been looking in to it and sounds quite a few audis have had similar problems. 'Characteristics' of electric steering ?

No it doesn't, similar feeling though, like it's trying to hold you in a straight line, then you try and turn the wheel slightly then it starts notching slightly. I've checked tyre pressures and they are spot on too

Had an a4 on 19" summer and 18" winter rims and dynamic steering - and now the Leon, running the same 19/18" setup. Never had any notchy feeling in the steering and I did multiple trips across Europe in the a4 and the Leon went from Scandinavia to south of Spain and back this summer..

However traveling in the inner lane on the highway can course quite some annoyance as the wheels follow the "lines" made by lories, which is not exactly comfortable. Are you sure that was not what was happening? If that is not the case I would try and see if I could replicate the incident and if so take it back to the dealer...

No it's definitely not doing that. If you imagine you are driving dead straight then go to turn the wheel slightly, that's when it notches, either turning left or right. Trouble is it only occurred on the motorway so hard to show dealer. They still say it's normal though ?

Have you tried different drive modes such as Sport mode that makes the steering heavier ?? Does it still do it then ?

I didn't try that no. Not due for another drive on motorway for a couple of weeks now though so hard to test it out, I will try it though, thanks

Keep us posted on this, I'd be interested in the outcome.
I'm afraid a lot (not all) of SEAT dealers are boarding on useless, so best of luck find one that gives a ....

Lol "they all do that sir" " perfectly normal" seems the stock standard cop out for many dealers

Worth remembering- depending on how old the car is- it's not up to you to prove somethings faulty - although obviously there is or you feel something isn't right - It's up to them to prove to you that nothing is faulty and that they are correct in there assumptions that it's 'perfectly normal'

Different issue, but I had three trips to the dealer and a video clip before they finally admitted it wasn't a case of "they all do that sir" and replaced the problem part under warranty.

So I'd bang on at them until your happy with the outcome

Thanks for all the replys.
Car is only 6 months old with 3000 miles and we're really happy with it, just this one niggly thing which I've never experienced before.
