Noisy steering rack.

Over the past few days my Cupra has started emitting a creaking/groaning noise (presumably from the steering rack) when applying left hand lock.

It's most noticeable when low speed manoeuvring, i.e. parking.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Yep,

Just back from the garage, broken shock absorber dust cap apparently  ... replaced and all seems fine now.

Warranty job i'm afraid.

p.s. - mine was when applying right hand lock at parking / stopping speeds.

this was happening to mine to (only turning left, when parking). i had a steering rack replaced under warranty in sept, and all was well, but now the sound is back (albeit more quiet)!

i did some of my own research and it pointed towards steering column bearing, so i might suggest it to them again. booked in for an ecu update in 2 weeks anyway, so i'll get them to look at it then.

This is a known fault on MkV GTIs and was also reported by Auto Express in their Cupra long term test...

I'm wondering whether it is confined to the Cupras or whether other models in the range may be affected - like my FR!

My Ref Sport creaks and groans especially when applying steering in parking manouvers but at speed its not there.
Might have it checked up by the stealers soon.

Mine does this still, they say everything is ok. Though now when going over speed humps there is a nasty creak / rattle from passenger side front. Its a creek creek.... creek creek over the hump even at very slow speeds. Any ideas?

Been to the dealers for the first service and they have checked the noises.
They are ordering a new steering rack to be fitted under warranty.
It appears that it is a problem with the bellows (presumably the flexible rubber gaiter on the rack)
This work takes about four hours.
Dealer did say there was no problem to carry on driving, it was just an annoying noise.

PS good service from the dealer so far, I hope this further work goes as well

Had steering rack replaced under warranty on my touran for a modified one took then 6 months to develop one which I had to wait for and was a known problem, mine is 2005 and seems to be common for vags looking at it

I know VAG group cars have suffered in the past from excess movement in the front strut upper bearing which creeks during low speed turning and can knock when going over pot holes/sleeping policemen.

I have noticed in mine that it is starting to make the noise when turning the wheel left while doing slow moving. only just had its service as well and nothing was picked up then.

Well as suspected my car has a steering rack problem too, after only 3100 miles.

Anyway the new rack (new version) is on order, maybe will have to take car in in a week or 2 to get fitted.

Will be glad to get it done before I sell the car, no squeaks is always good :D
