I was looking at a very nice MK1 Leon the other day and he had a sticky number plate on the right side of the front bumper, go me thinking that I could get one made up and stick it on the Bonnet.

Does anybody know what the law demands about where you can and cant place a number plate.

I believe it's wherever the manufacturer has provided location for the plate to be placed, or wherever is furthest forward on the front.

So can't be in the windscreen or anything like that as the ANPR cameras won't be able to read them properly. That was a nightmare when I had my Alfa with the plate stuck on the left side.

60. Fixing of registration plate

(1) (a) Where a vehicle has been so designed that a space has been provided for the fixing

of a registration plate, the plate shall be fixed in the space so provided.

( Where a space is not provided the plate shall be fixed in the manner specified in

paragraph (2).

(2) Subject to paragraph (3), a registration plate shall be fixed vertically or, where that is not

reasonably practicable, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practical at the front and

rear of every motor vehicle in such manner that the characters of the registration mark shall, at all

times, be visible from the front or the rear of the motor vehicle.

(3) No registration plate shall be fixed in the front of a trailer.

(4) Where a trailer or a semi-trailer is drawn by another vehicle, the registration plate of the

drawing vehicle shall be fixed on the back right-hand side and that of the trailer or semi-trailer on the

back left-hand side of the trailer or semi-trailer.

(5) A registration plate shall be fixed at a height of not more than 1.5 metres from ground level.

Perfect thanks very much gives me all I need now go talk to the MOT Man.

I don't know how much these are really enforced though as pretty much every day on my way home from work I see a black Audi with its number plate in the passenger side, I can't even read it properly with the angle it's facing. He must have never been pulled over, maybe he just sticks it back in its normal place for MOTs then moves it afterwards.

Yes I agree thats what I have see as well, lots of motors with numberplate on the side wrapping round the bumper.

Thats why I am going to talk to MOT Guys and see what they say, I have done nothing yet just fancy moving it but dont want hassle from the boys in blue.

From memory, a stick on plate will not pass MOT as they are not made from the correct BS reflective material.
I run a shortened front plate, so that it does not overhang the grille. Looks much smarter (I have it on velcro coins so just swap to a regular plate for MOT).
