i noticed this the other day when i was cleaing the throttle body,

there is a **** load of oil and gunk inside the airbox and in airfilter.

this is obviously when i took the cover off, as you can see the amount of oit and crap inside the casing. i beleive its from my breather pipe.

this is the seal which sits between the throttle and the airbox.

Motorcycle forums say this is possible on bikes when the oil level is too high causing oil to be sucked up into the oil breather pipe that goes to the airbox.

If your oil level is not above the max level, then it could just be the few bits from a previous too high oil level.

so id clean the filter box out and also clean out the air breather pipe also.

Incidentally, do you know about distributor position/timing?

Is it just a case of positioning the distributor so that the oil notch is towards the clamp bolt hole then rotar arm on the timing notch? Then disconnect battery? or do you have to vag com it?

Think i sorted it by disconnecting the battery so resetting the ecu.

Re dizzy cap, get it done this weekend mate, they dont give you much warning!

Easy to check, see what the carbon rod is like.

Mine has had this since I got it. I was told by my trusty mechanic there is nothing to worry about. You just have to clean it out every year when you change the filter.

You can stop this completely by getting an oil catch can and running the breather pipe to that instead of the airbox so the oil mist condenses and collects in the can.

I had a small filter on the end of my breather pipe and just plugged the hole in the air box and all the sludge cleared up and was running great but it was just putting oil residue/mist straight into the air which 1. Was bad for my lungs when stationary, 2. Is probably illegal and 3. Made the surrounding engine components filthy.

I have since put the breather pipe back on the airbox until I can be bothered to find a place to bolt my catch can on to and run the mini filter somewhere where I can't breathe any mist that gets past the can. The oily residue has returned since...

engine back pressure

so yeah, found out why i had oil in my airbox

the back pressure is bassicly oil from the bottom end comming up to the top (through the cylnder, due to the piston rings being broken or worn and getting through the valves then up into the airbox.

i need some very cheap solutions to this problem, thinking of new engine, dont want rid of the car although having lots of problems with it at the moment.
