After an hour on the motorway my oil is still 65-68C

Seems too cold to me!

What is yours like at this time of year? I know the 8v has an oil cooler. Does it have a thermostat? Might be stuck open

I'll second that Paul. Hottest mines ever been is 92. And that was on the way back from Inters this year, where it was like 30's!! Guess its N.O.Temp this time of year, and as you mentioned, the cooler too.

Had 114c in the valver once, was driving like an absolute tw@t though

Most oils will be ok for 120 but not for long periods

The lads i knew that used to rally used thick 20w50 fully synth millers oil that could cope with high temps for long periods.

Thats a good point actually, i might stick a thinner oil in for winter so it warms up faster ;)

I really wouldn't bother the design of the 2.0 8v goes back as far as the 70's, so its probably better to have the thicker oil for protection.

I've been rocking 10/60 castrol edge for a while now in my 8v.

Hottest I've seen was around 114 I think driving in q manner I really shouldn't have been on my way to Inters 2010, and again it was hot. Think I'm around 75-85 after a couple of legal motorway hours right now.

Bear in mind the 8v oil cooler is a sandwich between the oil pump and the filter. It's not like a proper oil rad though it obviously has an effect.

Interesting point about oil weights... I was considering a 5-30 or similar for winter this year as I have a lot of 6am starts...

I had the sump off last year and everything was so lovely and clean without doing anything I was proud... Obviously clean doesn't equal not worn, but it's a good place to start !

Anyone any thoughts on lighter oils for winter? Guessing that ridiculous light 0w/30 is too far the other way! I'm just thinking something a bit lighter that will only stay there til spring?
