Higher pressure on cam lobes for fuel injection is the reason. This has been done to death if i recall in the tdi section oil sticky, a wee search through it will answer lots of questions.

Ps. Don't use text speak in posts, doesn't read well.

But have a look in oil thread.

The special PD oil is graded for the modern deisel engine in VAG range. Why exactly I don't know but the oil is thinner than normal deisel oil.

It contains additives and shear properties to protect the cam lobes driving the pump injector units (hence PD, "pump deuse"). Viscosity of oil is only to do with temperature, stand to be corrected on this.

Does anyone know if Diesel Magnatec is ok for PD engines or not?

ONLY if it specifically quotes the magic numbers: 505.01

A quick glance at the Castrol website shows that Diesel Magnatec is 10W40, which is not the same viscosity as a 505.01 oil. So my strong guess is no, you shouldn't use it in a PD engine.

Further info from this page: It has VW 505.00 rating, which I think means it's okay in a non-PD engine, but definitely not in a PD.

Castrol Edge turbo diesel 5W-40 is the one you want for a PD engine - it specifically quotes VW 505.01.

(I think Magnatec is 505 00)

Depends on your train of thought, according to manufacturer, no, it doesn't meet their spec. requirements, read other forums elsewhere and you'll find plenty that says the 505 01 requirement is a load of baloney. If in warranty you ought to stick with 505 01, once out of warranty then use what you believe is OK.

As other have said...

Millers XFE-PD is 505.01 approved and less than £30 for 5 litres.

Look on the Millers Oils website for your nearest stockist.

I'm going to buy some XFE-PD 5w40, but how many litres do I need for a full oil change? Can't find the answer anywhere, and don't have my manual!
