Wheels on, new hard lines on (but I need to do them again because they're not the right length)

went out, rubbed the rust off & boy do they pull up even with a squishy pedal.

ginger drive to work tomorrow with shorter than I want wheel bolts as I need to test.

Well my new found enthusiasm for braking has been fun, but I found out just how much stick a 1.6 8v can take. not a whole lot it seems.

Recovered back from MK, coolant dripping out the bottom once the steam had cleared - some serious 'clunk' noises head from the engine when it was cooling off.

Will remove the thermostat later on, see if that's all I need to do.

got damn hooligan

free :)

I just removed the thermostat - no more worries about it sticking now.

ran car well up to temperature for 40 mins fans kicking in & out and all seems well

You always have that feeling in the back of your mind "how long has the gauge been right over before I spotted it" the answer - not long it seems

Luckily I have spares (lol) so I swapped the expansion tank over given that at the road side the steam was coming from the seam.

While the car was proving itself out to me, I took the opportunity to drill the air box - one test drive later - it sounds better :D

I'm not exactly looking for excuses not to.

but the time I could have spent cutting the roof off the donor was spent making sure the car wasn't too hot lol

It's been a bit of a slow burner recently - not been well, and not had much time to myself at all - not in daylight anyway

I'd originally planned to take a week off - but needed to use holiday elsewhere

anyway

it's all about to take a new direction

The engine bay is now empty on the coupe.

3hrs work start to finish including getting the bl00dy exhaust manifold off (it won't fit in the garage otherwise!!)

Just need to cherry pick the bits off the rear subframe I need, reattach it, stick the hubs on & it's "rolling"

damned light though - I can lift the front end up & down with the rear wheels as the pivot point.

Amazing how heavy all the oily bits are innit? I recall the old mk1 Golf being ridiculously lightweight once the engine and box were out. Probably *could* have lifted the front and manhandled the engine & box out from underneath, but the disc cutter was just dying to be used, so out came the front panel... There's none of that subframe jiggery pokery on a mk1 Golf, so the front panel (etc) is all a bit more substantial and welded together. That was a funny old day that was. Not sure how much of the giggles derived from running a two stroke disc cutter in a poorly ventilated garage all day stopping only for more fuel and fresh cutting discs... :cheeky:

yeah - this was a stick the rolley pallet think under the engine / box

lower the car onto it & unbolt the rear subframe (steering column was already removed)
then jack the body way way up and drag the engine out

only then could I get the downpipe off!

Will do some work on the engine while it's out (all the belts etc) and I think I'll make it look pretty with some HT paint etc

It might not be going back in the same way though... depends on the sodding downpipe arrangement I will use (existing manifold is well cracked - so seems rude not to replace with a tubular one)

it's just frusrating driving something that stops & corners well - but takes ages to get up to speed

major over fuelling seems to have helped and now getting pops & unburnt fuel out the back. not something that normally happens to 1.6 estates

still, it'll get the heart it deserves this month :D

It was funny on the way to Oulton when Stu asked 'does it go sideway', replied "I don't know"

The answer was 'yes'

I'm so tempted to put the back seats in the garage when it's all done & half cage it.

Depends on the load area, as that's been damned useful
