Problem with the Girlfriends Ibiza 1.6s

Hello All!

First off I'd like to say the problem is with my girlfriends car so her description of the fault may or may not be correct?

She was driving to work this morning and she said that the battery warning light flashed on and her steering went heavy and wheels locked under heavy braking. (she was going down a steep hill and a car was coming hence the heavy braking).

On the rest of the journey the battery light came on twice more for a second or two but then went out again.

As she was very concerned I picked her up and took the car home, the battery light didn't come on once!!. Tested the battery and alternator with a multimeter and all seems fine. Thought it could have been belt slip but the tension seems fine, no squeeling and drove it hard without hearing, feeling any evidence of belt slip.

Any ideas what this intermittent battery light could be? Any help appreicated! Cheers

Once started, and the engine is running, disconnect either of the terminals on the battery, and see if the car continue's to run. If it doesnt, then the battery is doing all the work, and the alternator isnt working.

Obviously, check the cabling then., and then alternator.

Cheers guys i'll look for corrosion on the connections and then try disconnecting the battery with the car running.

Thinking about it, will it not harm any of the electronic components if you disconnect the battery with the engine running?

I dont think it would mate, as if the alternator is supplying the power to the car, then nothing should change. (Although, I did read that yesterday on another forum)

Sorry Gaz, I was replying to the other post, but in all honesty, i dont think the radio code is needed even after disconnecting the battery.
(Dont think I needed to on mine)
