Hi all

I am comtemplating fitting a detachable towbar to my Tolly. Having done a towbar fit on an Alhambra I know its not that much of a technical challenge (hopefully it wont be on this though).

Obviously the first thing I need to do is remove the bumper but cant find any instructions anywhere......so can anyone help me out.

After a bit of searching, the Witter towbar gives a brief description of how to get the bumper off. Not sure if im going to get a Witter as it seems the Seat OEM bar is Brink. But thats not the point of this thread.

Anyway the Witter bar that fits a Mk3 Tolly and the Altea XL is the SQ17Q. Do a search on Witter's site and open the fitting instructions pdf file.

There are some detailed guides in the posts in the Leon section which carry over to the Altea and I assume the Tolly too.

I've removed mine a few times recently as I've had the paint redone due to rub marks appearing after a shopping trip and also to spray the visible parts of my removable towball.

Anyway, there are 4x star type screws in each wheel arch and about nine under the bumper. Next you'll have to remove the lights with 3x nuts (8mm spanner) for each - be careful not to drop these behind the boot trim, this will reveal a further 3x star type screws beneath each light. Now all fastenings are removed you need a good tug on the bumper from around the wheel-arch (pull laterally away from the car) to un-clip it from its bracket. The bumper can now be withdrawn rearwards from the car but be careful to reach in and remove the electrical connection for the number-plate light and reversing sensors if fitted.

Refitting is the reverse of the above but be careful to press down on the edge that meets up to the boot-lid as I've found that it needs assistance to slide into its guide rather than riding over it. If this isn't done the edge of the boot lid just touches the bumper when closed.

Many thanks Mark the info will come in handy. I chickened out of doing the job as I put the car into a towbar specialist to get the.......towbar.......fitted last week. Cost a small fortune but looks (or doesnt as it detachable) spot on.

Thanks again
