Scraping noise - turbo

At around 1800-2000 revs where the turbo comes on.. I get a noise that sounds like either metallic scraping or a big air leak.

Sick turbo?

I have a passat tdi 130 awx engine which is effectively the same. Had a metallic hollow scraping noise since i have had the car for the past year. Done around 20k no problems or loss of performance.

I guess it probably means its on its way out but should last quite a while. Would not dare to get ot mapped.

There is no scraping noise if I rev the engine with the clutch depressed - does that rule out the turbo or does the turbo not activate if the clutch is depressed?

My mechanic is going to have a look at it anyway, said it could be something as simple as a stone stuck in the brakes.

Really? Thats strange...it may happen when turbo is under more load perhaps? I.e. When moving the turbo may be working harder? I cant see how though.

Had the same noise, put some wd40 on the turbo actuator and not heard it since. That was about 3 years ago

Sticking turbo actuator is quite a common one. Get under the car if you can and see if it moves freely.

If not then try and loosen it up a bit with some WD40 or similar.
