Noticed that there is what appears to be either a sensor or camera facing forward which is built into the rearview mirror.

My vehicle has an auto dimming mirror fitted.

So I know there's some device fitted which automatically dips your headlights if it sees a car coming towards you, and youv'e got your mainbeam on.

And I figure that there must also be something which informs the auto dimming mirror that the ambient light conditions means it should be ready to do its job.

Any thoughts as to what its purpose ?

That's the auto dipping sensor for the mirror.

The lane assist if you have it is a V shaped sensor in the windscreen. The sensor that forces you to put your headlights on when it starts to get dark by turning off the dash display, if not on auto or you don't have auto is hidden in the dial. :).
Thanks once again Tell, all understood.
