Solutions to niggly problems?

I've just got a mint '96 Toledo TDI SXE, with a full dealer history, but it's got a couple of niggly problems.

1. The boot needs some adjustment, as it doesn't shut easily. Any ideas on how I go about adjusting the catches?

2. The rev counter and trip computer don't work! Is there any simple thing to check? Where does the feed come from? And has anybody ever replaced such an item?

3. The ventilation control doesn't seem to make it to just the face vents without also keeping the feet vents open. I'm guessing this is just a trapped cable for the control?

Besides that, it's fantastic, and looks like it's been kept in a museum!

One last thing. The radio is original, and not the best. Does anyone know what speakers it will take. It's currently got 6 speakers. What are the maximum sizes for each area and where would be a good spot to mount some 6x9's?

in answer to one of your probs,

heater controls, hmm not an easy fix, i would guess that from what you describe, the heater position flap only works in any position apart from demist...

potentially its not a trapped cable, as they are on wires, sounds like the control arm which is a toothed cog on an arm has jumped,

its a pig to do,

2 ways. to do it depending on the concern.

if the cable has bercome detached, allow 3 hour min to refit and reset,

centre console out cubby shelf drivers side,

radio out,

heater contols off,

if you have large fingers / hands be prepared for a struggle.

you have to basically reclip all the cables in, and if i recall its the red cable.



if the cable is attached its just a matter or realigning the cogged arm.


centre console out...

if you turn the vent flap you will see the cog move,

you need to pop it of its arrowhead mount (not easy) but possible with some screwdrivers, but take care.

turn the knob to position the vent to full demist, and push/ pull the cable so you hear the vent open at demist,

then pop the cog back on the mount, engaging the splines on the other gears as you go.

its not an exact method, as you might find its not quite lined up, and you may need to do it again.


you will also need to excersise cation and treat going to the demist position with care, as you can cause the cog teeth to jump again putting you back to square one

and you must turn the fan off before turning to demist, as the force of the air is so great the (worn) cog cannot overcome the pressure and jumps off again)

other than that it works fine.


what wheels have you got on it?? i have some oem 9 spokes if your interested.

Thanks for that! Sounds like it's more trouble than it's worth though. I might be able to do it, but i'm certain that the dashboard would never be the same again if i dismantled it!

I'm more interested in getting the rev counter working!

I too have the standard 9 spoke alloys, and they are free from 'kurbing', just not brake dust!

you dont need to take the dash out,

centre console, radio, heater front

then its just working through the opening..

the haynes cordoba manual goes some way to helping with some of the mechanicals, but thats about it.
