Stone Chips on the Windscreen

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has had a problem with picking up stone chips on the windscreen, I am now on my 2nd screen with 2 chips on this one all within 5k miles, and I am getting bit hacked off with it, wondering if it is something to do with the angle of the screen.

Did 75k in my old golf with 1 chip in all those miles!

Cheers

I suppose it depends on how much mileage you do on what type of roads. I tend to end up with stones hitting my like bullets on motorways (usually hurled from the back of one of those badly-loaded tipper trucks full of rubble - you know the ones). Fortunately so far I've only managed to pick up one very minor chip in the screen (although I've ended up with a lovely ding in the wing from a stone that must have been more like a boulder!) although I picked up a fair few more in my mk1.

I guess a lot of it is down to luck (or lack thereof) too. I know I instinctively stay waaaay back from tipper trucks on the motorway these days, and overtake them with haste (and a lane buffer if possible) when I can.

Autoglass can go jump. They were worse than useless last time I needed their services, right up until the point I told them they could stick their glass up their a*se and went to RAC Auto Windscreens instead.

Any idea how much a new screen is? I don't have windscreen cover at work we have to pay and claim back on expenses!!!!!

I put it down to increasingly bad road maintainance and heavier traffic. I had something hit my windscreen like a bullet on the M60 a couple of months back, very frightening, needed a complete replacement.

My last car ended up covered in stone chips (Alfa147) but previous to that one I hadn't had a problem. I'm also beginning to wonder if modern environmentally friendly car paint isn't as tuff as the old toxic stuff.

Does that not put up your premium though?

I had a passenger window replaced on the Celica when it was broken into (using the glass cover part of my policy).

Paid the £50 excess and didn't lose any no claims but it has put my premium up and I need to declare it to every company when I get a quote.
