Strange issue with FR wheels.

Hi all. I've currently got a demo FR for the week. Today I noticed something very unusual.

The car is on the standard 17 inch 5 spokes which I must say look miles better in the flesh.

However. The wheels are different on either side of the car. The wheels have a twist in them like the old 911 wheels. This means that you'd need different wheels for either side of the car or the twist will be in reverse on one side of the car. However the car I've got has just got 4 identical wheels on meaning they do not look the same on both sides of the car.

Is this a mistake on this particular car or is this a strange oversight on the part of seat?

This made me laugh!

Made me chuckle too
Especially the 911 quote, luckly I never put the wheels on the wrong side of any of my 911's LMAO

I know what you mean, like the dogleg 911 wheels, so they are right and left handed wheels. Also like corvette saw blades.

So your saying your demo car as handed wheels? Any pics?

Apparently they are colour coded by seat so you don't put them on the wrong side, you may not of noticed as I believe seat mechanics undergo special sight traning so the difference in colour shows up :D

Sorry couldn't resist a little wind up

The wheels on a 911 go on either side(you can't put the fronts on the back or vice versa, but That's because the wheels are wider on the back than the front, not because they are handed)
Its the same with the seat, I can see why you came to the conclusion u did, but if you think about it a bit more it will become clear
Its to late in the day for me to give you a technical explanation, but I'm sure someone will if its still not becoming clear why the wheels can go on either side
Cheers

Firstly let me point out I'm not a 17 year old comparing the Leon to a 911. Secondly I am fully coherent on the ways of different size wheels on front and back etc.

I also completely understand that the wheel on the FR can go on any corner. My point however, is that because of it's design the appearence of the car changes from one side to the other. I just find this strange and the only other car off the top of my head I could think where this is also an issue was the Porsche.

Here we go.

Thick part of spoke at the front.

Thick part of spoke at the back.

All 4 wheels are the same but your viewing angle isn't

Exactly. As I have already said several times all 4 wheels are the same.

But for the car to look the same from both sides it would need 'handed' wheels.

There are other cars like this, those that spring to mind are some variants of the current Mazda 3 (Venture? or Tamura, i cant remember), and the Mk1/Mk2 Daewoo Matiz. :)

The Leon I have on order has those wheels on, tbh I'd have preferred to have had the 17" optional SE alloys, didn't want 18s as the tyres are more expensive.

Now, I am the sort of person who likes the interior air vents to be all lined up (!!) so dunno if this would bug me. But, then again, there is only one side with a fuel filler flap, and I've never been bothered by that before.

Actually my X-reg (mk3?) Ibiza Cool./s had one wing mirror which was smaller than the other now I think about it.

Wow, that's a lovely car and looks like it is beautifully cared for.

(yes, you may use my images and put them on your own Photobucket account, no problem at all)

It would be a nightmare for manufacturing, distribution and fitting if alloys such as theses were 'handed'. And simply not commercial sense on all but luxury cars.

But like the OP, it offends my OCD as well.

(For those who still don't get it, when a car is moving forward, the wheels on the offside are rotating clockwise and the wheels on the nearside are rotating anticlockwise. With certain patterns on the wheels, the visual effect will be quite different.)

Pretty sure you will find that this is the same with all wheels that have a specific direction built into the design, If you look at the 18" Titaniums you will see the same thing thay angle to the rear on one side and forward on the other, The other 18"s are the same but it doesnt notice quite so much due to the design.

My old Escort RS Turbo was the same.

Its exactly the same on the 16" wheels on the SE.

But since I cannot see both sides of the car at the same time and since I cannot see the wheels rotating while I am driving I am not going to start bothering.

If it offends you so much buy a different car.

Bit drastic! A symmetrical wheel design would be cheaper.
