the way i see it if diesels are faster and use less juice then why do manufactures still make petrol cars and why are all the high end performance cars petrol (focus RS, cupra R, VR6 ferrari, porche so on...
Why's audi going to Le Mans with a V12 diesel then? Bet they win

in simple the only reason they are going to le mans with a Tdi is for marketing.

as EV20vt saying he can get 39 mpg sitting at 70 to 75, all i can say is can i borow your magic wand. I have cruise on mine which is a damed site better than any right foot for fuel economy, and i can get 40 mpg over say 20 odd miles but thats sitting at 60 mph no way would you get that at 75 ish unless you have pedals and 6 speed box i never knew about.

back to topic

As for your choice mate, basd on the fact you don't whether you will be loads of milage or not but high chance you could be, then i say go for the Cupra Tdi. Reason i say cupra tdi over the 130 is the difference in cost justified by the equipment differences and also they are damn site rarer than tdi 130's. Also on the whole range they seem to have the best residuals so are the safer bet.

I'm only stating what my trip computer said at the time. Sorry if you don't believe me.

I had a Leon Cupra and have an Ibiza tdi. On an identical commute, driving them in a similar style/speed I got 28mpg max out of the Leon and 47mpg out of the Ibiza. At the time that equated to £300 per month saving purely in fuel! I never got 30mpg out of the Leon. I have seen 65mpg doing 70/75mph on a single motorway trip in the Ibiza. I did 47k miles in the Cupra and have done 30k in the Ibiza (the Ibiza's computer is showing an overall of about 47mpg for whatever the computer has been running for - a couple of thousand miles at least).

Got to agree with DaveP here.

We've had our Leon 20VT for 25k miles and on the longer runs I get just over 30mpg out of it. Round town its dreadful. I wouldn't budget for averaging more than 30mpg if you are weighing up commuting costs. As a workhorse the petrol cannot compete on any grounds with the diesel IMHO.

Yeah I have to agree with most of what has been said about the TDI engine's, they are just brilliant.

I never ever thought I would be driving a TDI untill I took one out for a test drive by chance and I had to re-think what I was going to do, and I ended up going for the TDI (the torque just blew me away!).

For realistic road driving the TDI is faster, I dont fancy getting caught by one of those new speed camera's (drive on the m5 around bristol to see what I mean, tinny little ******* camera's) so I wont be doing 130+ down the motorway.

I went for the Ibiza FR in the end insurance is just that much cheaper then the Cupra and they have now droped the price to be the same as the petrol! Though the Cupra is that much nicer looking, but I did not feel worth the extra price (love the 'stealth' of the FR, can shock a fair few people).

Oh and overtaking is bliss in a TDI, as are hills!

I don't really think it's a question of power when you're doing that amount of miles a day ; it's more down to comfort and refinement.

I've had both a 20VT (Leon) and Cupra PD150 (Leon) and I much prefer the TDI simply because of how low the engine revs are on the diesel compared to the 20VT. Also the TDI can punt around in pretty much the same gear while the petrol needs a bit left arm gymnastics for over-taking ... but nothing major and the 20VT is way quicker and way more exciting to drive.

I'd suggest you test drive both properly and make a decision on that.

Another thing to bear in mind is that you are allowed to return your car before 21 days if you purchase a used car from a SEAT dealer, so if you find you don't like one and fancy the other then you can go for it.

Finally, when it comes to selling the car again, you'll always get top dollar for the TDI over the petrol variant.
