Touch screen unit replacement questions

Hello all,

Ongoing annoyances with the renowned touch screen cold weather problems - track jumping, source changing, etc. Since I've no intention of changing this car (2013, 2.0 diesel) for a few years I'm going to replace the unit, and I have some questions I hope you can help with.

1. Were there different versions of the head unit, i.e. in later versions of the mk3?
2. Would a unit from Skoda/VW be a straight swap?
3. Can anyone recommend a supplier of 2nd hand screens which come with a decent guarantee?
4. What other options do I have?

I don't mind spending a bit more to get this fixed with some permanency - no point doing it on the cheap and being no better off. That said, I don't really want to fork out for a brand new unit!

Thanks for input folks.

Hey Don-p.

1. Yes there are different unit. MIB1 is used until late 2015 i think. After that they used MIB2 systems.
2. Skoda/VW won't be a straight swap cause of the parameters are not the same.
3. Can't help you with that cause im not from the UK
4. If you have an MIB1 unit with 5.8 inch screen. I got one for you if you like. Because I recently switched to an MIB2 system(proces was a pain in the ***) Unit is with Navigation and DAB. After removing Component Protection should be straight swap if you already had these options.

Hopefully this helped you a bit.

It really depends on how much you are willing to spend and what system you have.
Given the year of your car I think you will have the MIB1 unit (it is possible that you have the 'High' version though) and maybe the small screen (5.8"), do you have navigation?

If you want to spend the money Alpine have an after market system with a nice 7 inch display which I bet feels way smoother to use almost like a tablet than the original. They claim all the settings and what not can still be used as it's designed for the leon. It's around £800 though. It should be direct replacement. Google it! Oh and it supports apple car play and android auto.

I did see the Alpine replacement (Alpine make at least one of the oem ones I think), and they do look good but £800 is a lot of coin. So,I have sourced a replacement screen from Mr Hendriks above.

If I am replacing one MIB1 screen with another is it simply a case of unplugging one and plugging in the new one, or is there anything that required coding from a dealer? Are there specific h/u removal tools that I need? No doubt none of the h/u removal tools I have accumulated over the years will be the right fit...!
