Vibration...

maybe you might want to ask your garage about the camber ajustment on the car just a thought, this a bit more expensive than 4 wheel aligment

Ive got a similar problem at the moment on my Fabia..
Have got a set of 17"s on which juddered a bit when i first put them on, had them balanced which cured alot of the problem. but there was still a slight wobble at high speeds...
Fast forward a few months... and the wobble is much worse.. accompanied with a wheel bearing type "brrrrrrrrrrrr" from the front wheels. i did suspect a wheel bearing, but the noise is different on different surfaces. now a few posts back i read that toyos are reknown for going a bit wierd when worn? my fronts are almost down to the wearblocks... but one interesting thing i noticed, the inside edge of both front tyres is very worn. and part of one tyre is worn uneven, like there is a ridge in the tyre, but the rest is smooth, so im erring towards a out-of-round tyre.

thing is, the wear on the inside edge is worrying me. ive had no suspension mods apart from the 17" wheels instead of the 16" would these be enough to mess up suspension to wear the inside edge? or am i just driving them too hard?

im getting new suspension put on soon, and a full 4 wheel alignment before i will replace the tyres. will this cure the problem, or highlight any bigger problems?

what is this camber ajustment check? will it get checked with the 4 wheel alignment?

sorry for the long post..... got to go put my 16"s back on until its sorted :(

Right then folks, here's an update...

Got in my car this morning to drive to the garage, and there was barely any judder there at all  Certainly not like it was yesterday!!

Anyway, drove up to the garage along roads I know all too well... about 45 miles worth... and there was a slight 'knock' through the steering wheel, but nothing more. What I did notice though, was what sounded like a wheel bearing drone  This would start up at high speed, and then the pitch would continue to go up with the car.

Thing is, this sounded like it was coming from the passenger side of the car, and if anything, from the back. This wouldn't really explain the knock from the steering wheel though, would it?

Anyway, I had the tracking re-checked - all ok.

Had the wheel balance checked - the fronts needed a 10g and 5g weight on each in addition to what was there, and one of the rears needed a 5g weight. The other was spot on.

Myself and 2 mechanics watched the wheels spin on the balancer - watched them from the front, the tread and the rear.

The wheels are all perfectly round - so no buckle there then!!

The tyres... 3 of them had a very small kink in them. Both the mechanics said this was normal, and nothing to be concerned of. We noticed it on both sidewalls but the tread seemed to retain its lines, so maybe they were made like that, I don't know.

Not having studied any other tyre so closely when it was on the balancer, I really can't comment.

Anyway, driving home, another 45 miles but on different roads, the slight vibration in the steering wheel was still there, as was the drone...

...could the drone be because of the worn inner edges of the tyres? Or is that the sign that I should be paying a lot more attention to the bearings?

It still gets me though, that the car was so smooth today compared to yesterday - that's what's really foxing me!!

Well, I'm off for a spin to Liverpool and back now  so I won't be back on until sometime tomorrow!!

I'll let you all know how I get on :)

im having the same problems, when im drivin g on the M4 , only on certain parts of it the front wheels vibrate, again i have had the wheels balanced 2 times and the tyres are all new.

the car only vibrates at about 75-85 mph. wierd? any ideas???

My suggestion would be that you may have a heavy join or splice in one of the tyres. No matter how many times you balance it you will still get a problem. Think of the sidewall of the tyre as a set of springs.....that compress as the sidewall flexes. If there is a heavy sidewall join then this area will be slightly stiffer than the rest of the tyre so will then give you a vibration.

How do I know about this....worked as an Technical Engineer for Bridgestone for 6 years and saw it on a few tyres. The only way to get it checked is to get an engineer from the tyre company out to look at it (they will do it FOC).

If you can get to a tyre depot that will strip the tyre off the rim for you then you can feel around the inside of the sidewall and if you feel there is a heavy overlap on the sidewall thats probably the problem. It may not be the problem but it is worth a look into.

Hope this helps.
