Having now reached the dizzy heights of 500miles jus wondered if anyone had experienced a weird vibration/buzzing noise on acceleration in fourth gear.
In my FR Tdi when I accelerate (only in fourth) from about 1500rpm to 2500rpm it has a sort of low rumble as if something is vibrating against something in the engine bay. ???

Any ideas???

Boost pipe vibrating against the fuel filter?
Yep, i agree, happened to mine and many others.Just stick some foam or a sponge invbetween to damp the sound out.

Just to prove my stupidity... any chance of a photo or thread showing this?

Also it's common to get a vibration from the gearlever while accelerating in 4th ;)
Otherwise, boost pipe against fuel filter housing would be most likely, but I'd expect this to happen in more than 1 gear....

Its definately just in fourth gear. Gonna try some padding but I think it might actually be in the dashboard somewhere??

If it's just in 4th then I'd put money on it being the gearlever linkage, mine did exactly the same thing from new, and I've heard several other people with the same "feature".

so thats a back to the dealer job then. As obvious as this might sound... can I take it to any Seat dealer or the one I ought it from. Just don't fancy the drive all the way to London again if I don't need to?

I'm agreeing with spyke, I've just had mine down to *cough* the dealers and my vibration (acceleration around 1500-2500rpm) was the boost pipe too.

I'm pretty certain its gearbox related now. In neutral if i give the gearstick a wobble when it stops moving it seems to come to rest against something and makes the same noise. cheers again for all the help guys!

That's identical behaviour to mine. Sometimes it rattled on startup, but just nudge the gearlever slightly to one side and it stops.

By the way, it's not the gearbox, just the gearlever mechanism just below the gearlever gaitor.

is there an easy fix or still a dealer job?
My dealer couldn't fix it, but I think that was more a case of "we can't be arsed to fix it Sir".

I had a look at it myself, it's caused by play in the gearlever linkage. If you remove the gaitor you'll be able to see for yourself, but be careful how you remove the gaitor, I can't remember how I did it now !
I reduced the problem of rattle at idle by stuffing foam down the LHS of the linkage, helped a bit (but IIRC didn't help the 4th gear rattling).

I might even still have some photos I took of it a while back (I'm sad like that  ) I'll have a look tonight. Don't own the car any more so can't take any more if not !

bugger, i might have to give my local dealer a go, the fact the car didn't come from them might not help my cause either...
