comes from engine bay, sounds similar to when you set your house alarm (i.e. the buzzing the keypad makes) although much quieter. stops after 15 - 20 secs.

Its the secondary water pump i should imagine. Its there to cool the turbo down after been driven. Or are we talking about with just the ignition switched on before you start the engine? If so then its probably your throttle body.

The turbo isn't water cooled so the secondary water pump will not directly cool the turbo. It just pumps the water round the cooling system to stop heat soak.

this is keys out of ignition, i hear it when i'm walking away from car. made a point of bending down beside engine bay other day to listen, sounds like an electronic noise, only thing i can liken it to is my house alarm keypad but much quieter, a constant buzz that stays on for 15 - 20 secs.

I know what you mean - often have wondered but never worked it out, lol! It's like a quite high pitched ringing. I always assumed it was something related to the alarm...

I hear a humming, which I assumed was the fan cooling the engine...

I also hear a humming from inside the cabin when I first open the door after unlocking...

In front of a PC....
I always thought it was a pump or a cooling fan than ran for a bit after the engine has been switched off to cool it down. It always stopped after a few seconds anyway so its not something that I worried about (other cars do this as well)

i heard it was an anti-shudder valve, according to the dealer as mine wouldnt switch off at one point but it was related to a dodgy fuse box but the dealer said it was a combination of the EGR valve and an anti-shudder valve

I'm sure i read in either the owners manual or the technical docs from Erwin that its an auxiliary water pump as suggested.

Another noise that can happen is the ventilation systems diverter flaps moving to a sort of sleep position.
