Why do people change there wheels in winter??
For winter tyres.

Easier to get second slighty smaller set of alloys rather than buy more expensive (larger) winter tyres and swap them over for winter and after winter...

Here in Sweden it's illegal to drive without winter tyres (studded or friction) between december 1st and 31th of march. We have kind of comparable weather but I'm guessing you guys don't have a law like that over in the UK? I've read about the chaos in UK traffic after snow storms :D

I bought mine with winter tyres equipped to the original 18" Performance 1 rims and I'm planning to put the summer tyres on new 19"s next year.

Yh no such law over in the UK. When ever it snows in this country this country comes to a stop, everything is delayed, schools close everything that could go wrong can and will go wrong. Its great :)

Been driving cars 25 years and I can honestly say that I have never used winter tyres or chains. If you buy a good quality all season tyre you should be fine.

Should...

If tyre is good for summer how it can be good for winter ? All season tyres are not really good for anythig to be honest...

Try winter tyre first and then will see how big difference you will notice.

Never needed to have winter tyres so I don't think I'll start now. If the snow is so bad I wont drive,,,, simples.
I am just trying to state that I have never required the need to have them IMO

Winter tyres are not just for snow but for low temperature as grip on "standard" rubber is very poor when temp is low.

Winter tyres are made from rubber compound which works very well when temp is low.

They will fit.

I agree with you @Alzak. Winter tire helps to handling and other tires frozen under the 5 degree and they won't be adequate for driving in winter or cold.

I'm starting to look at winter wheel and tyre options on my FR.

I might try and get hold of some 16" SE alloys and use them, or you can get steel wheels with tyres for around £400. Sounds a lot but it should hopefully be safer in winter months and the summer tyres will also last longer.

Is there any issue with insurance dropping from 225/17 to 205/16?

Won't be buying any winter tyres, as if roads are really bad will jump on a bus. After many years of riding a motorbike all year round, I think driving a car in winter (even when bad) is a doddle in comparison even with my standard summer tyres.

Meppershall Beds.
depends on the insurer. Some just like to know....and Alzak is bang-on about the rubber compounds, JCB.
winters have a different mix of rubber and silicone, designed to work better below 7C degs. Not snow specifically, just better grip in the dry and wet too.
Worth doing some research. I never used them before, but have bought another set of wheels, fitted the winters to them, and will change them when the temperature looks set to drop for any time.
And change them back when it goes up. No impact on wear, as the normal are sitting in the garage NOT being used.
Just money tied up in spares, that's all.

The wife only learned to drive 5 years ago and as a child minder in an s-max, I put winter tyres on the car. Pirelli's. November to march for three years. They had 5mm on them when I swapped for the new Leon. I'm now after winters for the Leon and would try and convince anyone of their benefits. Safety first folks. It will be one of those laws that comes over here soon enough.
