Wierd ticking noise in an ST 300.

Hi
Asking for a pal,
He test drove an ST today and loved it.
Only thing is,
He could hear a ticking noise in front of him.
I expect similar to the carbon canister in the Mk1s but I don’t know.
Is this a thing or was he hearing something else?
It was probably not very loud ( he has digital hearing aids which in close quarters pick up everything and magnify it ).
He was adamant he could hear something but wouldn’t commit to the car because of it.
Any advice would be great.

The engine does tick a little if you open the bonnet and listen for it. My 2017 GTI made the same noise.
