Did a little unscientific but representative test on sunday comparing my MPG on the run down to Inters against Chriis's in his Boc.
The 1.6 should thump the Boc here surely? straight run down the motorway, pretty average motorway speeds 70-80, with the odd blat.

I thought the results were disgusting:
Run to Inters
1.6TDi 43
Boca 39

Even worse is how poorly my engine is against the book values versus how Chriis's does against his

1.6 Tdi
Book Urban 52.3
Book Extra Urban 78.5
Book Combined 65.7

down Urban 9.3
Down E/Urban 35.5
Down Combined 22.7

% Down Urban -17.8 %
% Down E Urban -45.2 %
% Down Combined -34.6 %

Boc
Book Urban 34
Book Extra Urban 53.3
Book Combined 44.1

down Urban +5
Down E/Urban 14.3
Down Combined 5.1

% Down Urban +14.7 %
% Down E Urban -26.8 %
% Down Combined -11.6 %

Booked it into dealers for next monday for them to look at /waste their time on, as they're going to say what they said on the phone "it's not a fair test, as it's different cars, different weight drivers and loads, different weight stereo (eh? i laughed inside) maybe one of you had window open or aircon on etc etc"
And while yes I accept there are numerous variables that affect MPG, I can't see why the variables would be THAT different between the two.
The book values for the 1.6 are 50% higher than for the Boc, so mine is more knackered/short of book than Chriis's, if they were just as knackered I should've got 58-60, which i'd've been delighted with.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this/spotted any errors etc i've overlooked before I let it rip at the dealer?

I think that's terrible lol
even I averaged 40.2 :) and my foot was flat most of it haha
they will just say different driving styles lol.

Did you notice your mpg when you did the handling course ?
Mine dropped to around 20-24 lol

Foot flat most of it? you must've had little dwarves duping buckets of fuel into the engine to make up the time you did!
They can sod right off on different driving styles, it was down the m1 for 80 miles then a bit of nose to tail country lanes, naff all difference.

Can't say what the handling course did to mine, as I had the engine running for ages to get the aircon cooling the interior but when we set of it was reading 8mpg. I can say however that handling course raped about 2mm from my front tyres

I mean on the way back aswell :D haha
I couldn't afford to leave my engine. Lack of fuel and everything. But I.got raped at the petrol station 144.9 per litre!!! I couldn't put more then £10 in at that price

my tyres aren't too bad :p.not done much to them

Forget the air-con, open windows, roof racks, low tyre pressure, dead weight, wind resistance, air temperature, overweight drivers, how loud you are playing your stereo, how hard your cabin heater is blowing and all the other real world conditions that might be eating away at your mpg. The latest contributing factor to be included as an excuse for not getting the official figures: - The Power Steering! Because the official rolling road test doesn't use the steering! All of the real world conditions apply to all cars and all other cars have been able to get the official figures.

Don't worry, they won't waste much of their time on it. Once the computer says no they'll probably spend more time fobbing you off about it that actually looking at the car.

Just a few thoughts - I can't see any glaring errors.

Under those conditions I'd expect my 1.2 TSI SE to return somewhere between 42 and 49 mpg depending on the speed. So if that's true you could have bought a 1.2 TSI for far less money, got slightly better economy, spent less on fuel since diesel costs more, got slightly better performance and probably better refinement.

What is it with these 1.6 TDI's, some people seem delighted, others disgusted? It's all very weird.

Note that under the conditions you describe there shouldn't have been any regeneration cycles at all so that can't come into it which it can for people doing loads of short trips.

Very interesting point about the regens. Amongst all of the excuses that have been given for poor fuel economy the presence of a DPF and the regens has never been blamed. I wonder why...

It's a poor excuse!

I have just read VW self study document 259 on their Electrically Powered Hydraulic Steering (EPHS) like that on the Ibiza. On the motorway it needs about 80 watts or 1/10 horsepower. To shift the car you'd be using some tens of horsepower, say 30 horsepower at a rough guess. This means that the power for the steering is 0.3% of that for the car!

My best mpg so far was achieved on Monday's commute to work, about 10.5 miles.
It peaked at 65.2 and finished at 60.0 when I parked up.
Max speed was 50mph, mostly 30/40 on A roads with some town driving thrown in for good measure.
Apart from one occasion, I've always used Tesco Momentum (not that there's much choice for premium unleaded on the IOW!)

Ive got an Ibiza Eco and just last week i got 90.3mpg. A record for me!! I took a photo, which ill aim to put up in due course. I make the same journey every day and i tend to get roughly 70-80mpg. its about 15 miles. Quite good though i thought. My last tank of fuel lasted 650 miles.

What engine is that? Those figures are brilliant!

My current best so far (I've only had Candy for 4 days) has been 57mpg! Such an improvement over my last car!

It's just a suggestion. But how about posting two photos. One showing the average mpg display and one showing the miles driven display. Either both of Trip No 1 or both of Trip No 2. That will show over what distance you managed to maintain your average mpg.

Congratulations on the 90.3 mpg by the way - very impressive!

Its a 1.4. Its not an amazingly quick car, but it does the job i want it to do (fuel wise).
Haha lovin' the name! A good colour too, I want one in White now! The engine and everything will soon bed in and then youll see the benefits!

I've been doing quite well this last week, got 435 miles before refilling, was 5 miles remaining still showing on the range computer and an indicated consumption of 45mpg.

Hey all,

New to the forum, I have had my Ibiza sportrider 1.6 TDI for a month now having previously having a 1.4D Mini One. But like some on here, the fuel consumption doesn't seem that great! Half a tank on the gauge is only lasting about 130 miles. I have filled it up tonight fully for the first time. But the trip computer is only saying 350 miles, how accurate is that? Cos not that impressed with that estimate!

Cheers

It's not that accurate. My fuel light was on when I left work today, said 25 miles left on the screen, put in about £4 worth of petrol, range didn't change, drove the 40 miles home, computer now saying 15 miles left. Does not compute! Generally get 400+ miles to a tank though, and that's with the old 1.4 petrol, spends most of it's life up and down the motorway.
