resetting service indicator

hey guys,

I know this thread has been covered a few times , however I can not seem to find a clear how-to in the search function.
question is: how do I reset the service indicator...

I've encountered several methods,but they don't work.(yes, a vagcom is the easiest, but I don't have that.)

Mine is :

1. Ignition off ( Key OUT )
2. Hold in trip reset and whilst holding it in turn on the ignition
3. Keep holding the trip reset in untill you see --:--
4. Turn trip reset to the right.
5. Release trip reset and turn off ignition ( key OUT )
6. turn ignition back on and all should be reset.

Its in the handbook if you have one but Deanos explanation is much clearer

I've have searched the handbook 3 times...believe me, I did not find it anywhere!
