Trying to get USB port working...

I have been asking about this problem in my first thread but thought it may get a better response in its own thread.

I have just bought an Altea with a USB port in the armrest - there is no CUP input in the centre console or any other 3.5mm jack located anywhere that I can see. The stereo that is fitted is the MP3 stamped one with a selector button marked 'CD/AUX'.

I have tried inserting a USB stick and an iPhone 4S (using special lead that I purchased ahead of picking up the car) but regardless of what I do I cannot get the headunit to even acknowledge that there is anything connected. I've tried double pressing the selector button, long pressing it etc but all it does is 'bong' and display 'no cd'.

I've trawled numerous threads on these forums but am still none-the-wiser as to what the problem is.

In the 'Leon' section on here I have found reference to how to change the settings on the headunit to turn on the AUX

From memory:

Turn the head unit on
Press 'PROG'
Press the round button below the '>' arrow on the screen
Press the round button below the 'auxin' (I think) option
Press the '<' or '>' (next/prev track buttons above the volume control) to turn it on or off.

If you don't get an 'auxin' (or similar) option, then check if you have the 'CD changer' icon on the screen. It'll be next to the single circle icon (which indicates a CD is inserted), and will look like two overlapping circles. If this is present, then the unit thinks a CD changer/ipod/USB is connected, and won't enable the aux in socket.

From what I know there 2 versions of the SE3xx head unit that were used in pre-facelift Mk2 Leons:

Looks like your car got the aux-in centre console jack, but got an MP3 head unit without the 'AUX' label on the 'CD' button, so maybe there is a third version of the unit with MP3 capability but no 'AUX' input selection. Would be interesting to know if these unit have CD changer control capability or not....

... but I don't know whether this is relevant to my headunit??? Are they the same units in the Leon?

Also could someone tell me if the headunit 'docks' into the dash or whether it can be remove and retain its connections as I don't have a radio code so do not want to pull it out to check rear connections if there is a risk of it losing its power?

Thanks in advance for any help :D

As you have the large MFD display this should mean you have Bluetooth (large MFD display was part of the Bluetooth pack) - not sure how it worked in the earlier vehicles, but is the USB port part of the phone/Bluetooth system eg needing a Bluetooth dongle to get phone connected? Does anything phone linked appear in the MFD display, not the head unit?

Interesting. The only time I went into the 'phone' option on the MFD was with nothing in the USB, when I was just poking around for the first time... All it said was 'insert phone' and then the MFD locked up (had to hold the bottom button for ages to get it to do anything). So does the phone option rely on a dongle in the USB? Seems a bit strange as you would think the Bluetooth connectivity would be built in somewhere? I only wish I had an old dongle still to test it!

Having been working away for a few days I finally had chance to have another play yesterday... still no joy with the USB but I can confirm that the car has bluetooth installed! Wasn't expecting that on a 2006 car so a nice surprise that I don't have to shell out on a Parrot to stop the missus fiddling with her phone* whilst driving around with our unborn baby! Thanks for the heads up... when I saw the phrase "insert phone" I just assumed it was the old tech where you had a separate SIM installed!

* not driving with it in her hand but dialling to use speakerphone - bloody Siri never gets it right!
