Tdi turbo noise and loss of power

My car is an 07 plate Altea XL 170 Tdi with a remap and has been fine until recently where the turbo spooling up noise has increased along with more of a whine on full boost. Occasionally the car also seems to cough during acceleration. It all points to a turbo prob to me but what else could it feasibly be? New turbos aren't cheap so anything to keep my hopes up is a bonus!!.

The car's done 97k and I've never used any kind of treatment system. Doesn't kick out any smoke even under acceleration, and have had someone follow me to make sure.

Maybe the remap has just shortened the life of the turbine which was due to go anyway
