How long can I leave my MAF unplugged?

To cut to the chase, my MAF and O2 sensor were replaced last December but recently my engine light has come one and the car has felt a bit rough indicating possible MAF problem. On the readout the code was P0172 which was vague as it could be either the MAF or O2 sensor. I decided to test this out by unplugging the MAF and driving....and voila the car felt much smoother and responsive. I went back to the garage who did the MAF swap but the gaffer is away on emergency for a week and he's the guy I need to speak to regarding this.

Now, I'm wondering if it's ok for me to drive with the MAF disconnected until next Saturday. This will mean 5 days driving to and from work which will equate to around 250 miles.....would this be ok or should I leave it plugged in?

cheers guys for the responses. The garage boss is actually a mate and he's helped me out plenty with good deals and quick service so I dont wanna burn my bridges with him cos he's the guy I usually deal directly with rather than his staff.

I guess I'll bite the bullet and wait for his return leaving my MAF connected for a while longer....it's not as if the car's undriveable or dropping too much MPG

How do you remove the MAF? Its in between the airbox and the intake pipe right? So where do you begin to remove it and how do you get the intake pipe to fit onto the airbox without it?

I don't think I know what the MAF is then on my engine layout despite looking at pictures. I thought it was the plug thats on top of an adaptor between the airbox and the air intake hose. I have unplugged this before but made no difference and I thought that MAF was a wire in the middle not a plug?

Troubleshooting 17544 - System too lean error, persistent fault despite clearing it on VAG-COM. I think its a leaky hose which I can hear a hissing but not sure where. Sorry to thread hijack.

My MAF sensor has died, i've left mine plugged in and just driven in limp mode until i could get a new one. Its been ordered today so hopefully it will arrive monday. Funds have been tight due to pregnant wife wanting the nursery decorating :) its been broke for 3 weeks but the car has been fine just down on power. Can't wait to get the new one fitted. I;m going to do a throttle body reset at the same time.
