Hi Guys - My son has an issue with his 184TDI

The EML and the flashing glow plug light are on. Car is in limp mode.

Code read is
5244 - Fuel Pressure Sensor ( G247 )
P0193 00 ( 175 ) - Short to plus
MIL ON - confirmed

We have changed the fuel pressure sensor - still same issue

We have tested the fuel pressure sensor plug connections ( battery voltage was 12.65v ) - ignition on - engine NOT running
Pin 1 to battery positive - measured 7.65v ( should be battery voltage )
Pin 2 to ground - measured 5v ( should be battery voltage )
Pin 3 to ground - measured 0.01v ( should be 5v )

We have tested all three wires from the Fuel pressure sensor back to the ecu - no shorts and all show continuity.

Has anyone had a similar issue and what fixed it ?
We were hoping to find an issue with the wires or connectors.

I had similar issues with my 184 a few weeks ago but got code P0191 and replaced the sensor. It seems to have solved it for me though.

Sounds like yours is more wiring related and I don't know what to suggest. Hope you get it sorted.

For a P0193 fault of the fuel pressure sensor I get:

1: Check supply voltage pin 3
Turn the ignition on. Measure the voltage on pin 3. Should be between 4.8 and 5.2 V
2: Check ground connection pin 1
Turn the ignition on. Measure the voltage on pin 1. Should be between 0 and 0.2 V
3: check the connectivity of pin 2:
Measure the resistance between pins 2 and B 55 (E1 Engine control unit). Should be less than 1 Ω

Just for clarity - can you confirm which way the pins are numbered ?

BUT
The connector on the car has 1 and 3 the opposite way.

I don't have a connector diagram.
I would follow the labeled numbers on the actual connector.
Voltage should be checked between the pin and an earth - not the battery positive.

Been to car to do some measuring.

Ignition ON

Battery Voltage 12.57v
Fuel Pressure sensor plug disconnected.
Connector labelled Pin 1 ( Brown/Red wire ) to battery negative = 0.019v
Connector labelled Pin 3 ( Yellow / Brown wire ) to battery negative = 5.018v
Connector labelled Pin 2 ( Yellow / Grey wire ) - continuity test to ECU connector - 0.2ohm ( same reading as just touching the multimeter probes together )

Based on the above - I would say the wiring to the G247 fuel pressure sensor is good.

For me that confirms you wiring is good - and the fault is probably with the sensor - as long as you're sure the connecter is connecting to the sensor? I have had connectors which were not, and a small tweak of the contacts fixed it.

Fuel pressure sensors are just strain gauges. You can check their function - but really need need to scope the output signal when changing pressure. At this point I would be fitting a new sensor.

It has already had a new sensor - Bosch one.

Will try tweeking the contacts.

Ah yes, I see from your first post.

When I put the fault code "P0193 - Fuel pressure sensor 1 circuit high" in for my 184tdi it shows:
Fuel pressure sensor
Fuel pressure control valve
Fuel metering solenoid
Fuel pump

Some further testing:

Fuel pressure control valve:
1: Resistance between pins 1 and 2 should be between 1 and 5 ohms.
2: Ign on, measure voltage on pin 1 - should be between 11.5 & 13.5v
3: Measure the resistance between pins 2 and B 45 (E1 Engine control unit). Should be less than 1 Ω

Fuel metering solenoid:
1: Ing on, voltage on pin 2 should be between 12 & 14.4v
2: Disconnect the fuel metering solenoid. Connect pin 1 to the negative battery terminal. Briefly connect pin 2 to the positive battery terminal. The solenoid should 'click'
3: Measure the resistance between pins 1 and B 60 (E1 Engine control unit). Is it less than 1 Ω?

Fuel pump:
1: Measure the resistance between pins 1 and 3 (E9 Fuel pump control unit). Should be less than 1 Ω
2: Measure the resistance between pins 2 and 2 (E9 Fuel pump control unit). Should be less than 1 Ω
3: Measure the resistance between pins 3 and 1 (E9 Fuel pump control unit). Should be less than 1 Ω
4: Measure the resistance between pins 4 and 1 (O8 Grounding point 75). Should be less than 1 Ω

UPDATE - sorry for delay but life/work got in the way.

The measurements above all checked good.
Bought a complete fuel rail with fuel pressure sensor and fuel pressure regulator from a running CUPA engine.

Fitted fuel rail and finally got the flashing glow plug light off.
Took it in to a local specialist and had a forced static regen done on the DPF ( was 42g at start - finished at 3g after 40 mins )

Car seems to run normally now with the exception of the idle speed that seems to fluctuate slightly ( it used to be rock solid at appx 800rpm )
