head gasket

Can anyone help? what do the holes in a head gasket mean? I have an elongated hole and three circular holes in mine. These can be seen at the front of the engine when the gasket is fitted. I am changing my head gasket and the gasket I have bought has one less hole, have I got the wrong gasket as my motor factor says it is the right one

I think it is a way of telling the thickness of the gasket. An old vehicle I used to fix used to use the VW LT engine and i'm sure that's how we knew we had the right gasket. Maybe worth checking with a VAG specialist so you don't fit the wrong gasket. Just in case.
