Dam i really in two minds now. I want to go halfs with someone as i will only use it say 4 times a year!

ahh but if you only use 4 times a year, you will still have the machine for years to come, it can also be used for polishing wood /sanding etc etc, you will also find you use it for spot cleaning and scratch removal, so you will probably use it more than that

lol, i give up trying to convince you.
i love my cars and wouldnt do anything to them that would damage them, hence i wouldnt use any machine on it unless i completely trusted it.
when i said scratches i meant micro scratches, and i can assure you your car will have loads of these on it.
the pc is a very good machine, but if you have doubts just dont buy one, its easy ;-)

i have tried all sorts on my cars for years and years, and i have always been fairly happy with the results, but when i tried the pc i realised what i had been missing for all those years, the pc gives a depth of of clarity you wouldnt believe, it also gives your car an amazing reflection and shine

I've always been into polishing my cars, I've known the Porter Cable machine to be the best one by a long shot, so this will be a wise long-term investment for me. If I can achieve the following results by hand, imagine what the PC will do for me (and with less elbow grease):

Bring on the machine! :D

The single biggest factor in improving the gloss and reflection on my car came from using a paint sealant followed by the wax. A vast difference in shine compared to just using wax.

well before i bought the pc i used to :-

wash (2 bucket method)
clay
wash
dry with waffle towel
clean/polish the paint with a quality glaze (usually clearkote handglaze)
seal (usually with poorboys exp)
nxt tech wax
then top of with 2 coats of high quality carnuna wax.

that provided me with good results, but with the pc i :-

wash (2 bucket)
clay whilst washing
dry
apply megs #83 (not neccesary unless your paint is in bad condition)
apply megs #80
apply megs nxt tech wax
apply megs #16

i dont do this everytime, its probably 4 times a year at the most, but i just top up with the #16, i can honestly say that the car looks the best that it ever has after the pc

Dont give up as im trying to convince myself!
One thing my yellow car gets dirty very quickly so i end up cleaning it every weekend!
Would this unit take out tar spots etc? as i have tiny black marks all over the place!

lol :D ,well i have not tried a pc on a yellow car, but i will be getting my cupra next week so i will let you know.
what you need to remove your black marks is either "clay" or a bug remover, i would use something like meguiars clay, brilliant at removing marks like you talk about, the pc will remove the marks but clay will do it too.
having your car properly polsihed and sealed and waxed will of course not stop you getting these marks, but it will be alot easier to remove them, my racing blue is similar, as its light coloured, it used to be a pain to remove marks on it until i got some proper wax on it

Go for it. Makes getting those black bits off much easier.

This chap seems to be selling 3M clay as his own brand but you can apparently get it from a lot of motor factors. Clay bar is much of a similarness, but you want to be buying some detailing spray to act as a lube.

the serious clay above has a slight cutting action, and can dull your paint, it does buff up very nice though after a polish.
the megs one is nice and mild and doesnt marr the paint, you can use some car shampoo mixed up with water in a spritz bottle as lube

Screwfix are fast! They emailed me to say my order was packed and shipped by 7AM this morning! I use the Meguiars clay bar, seems to work fine for me, although I do have the Swissol clay bar kit too (paint rubber set they call it).
