same big brakes stripped interior as the 16v just not as its an 8v.

Parkers lists the 16v gti as group 10 thats why i asked seems a big difference.

The Group 10 is for the pre-facelift GTi's, with the older SEAT 2.0 16v engines.
what group is the 1.8 16v?
Just to clarify, there is no such car as a pre-facelift 2.0 16v. Pre facelift GTi's came with 8v (115 bhp) engine and were in IG 10. Later came the 1.8 16v (130 bhp) in IG 12. The 2.0 16v (150 bhp) came along with the facelift and was IG 14.

The addition of the 'Cupra' branding seemed to bump the IG up one vs. the GTi. I never understood this as the 'Cupra' cars were less well specced than the GTi's, yet were in a higher IG? Thus the 8v Cupra is IG 11 and the 16v Cupra can be as high as 15. A bit silly really considering my S3 is only two groups higher.

The insurance groups are definitely higher on the Cupra regardless of what people say. Insurance companies may not take any extra premium on the Cupra but the book states that they are higher. I spent ages searching for 2l 16v Gti, not cupra, when one finally turned up it was an 8v!! :(. For the price & condition I bought it anyway as you can see <<<<<<<<<<< :)

people! the gti 16valve is group 10, because its not a cupra sport! and therefore isn't as vulnerable to being stolen etc. the gti 16 valve cupra sport is group 14. and the 8 valve cupra sport is 11. i've never herd of them fluctuating between groups. but who knows. but thats the paper figures. the gti has a sunroof and aircon and is more 'family orientated' than the cupra. this is why its a lower insurance group. it has no cupra stiching or badges. (unless people have done it them selves). but its 150bhp stock as is the cupra. but its a pain in the bum to think im paying for group 11 insurance on my 8 valve when i could be paying less for practically the same car but with an extra 8 valves!

I have to disagree with you jake. It is not group 10, there is a typo in Parkers. If you go onto the Association of British Insurers Website (http://www.abi.org.uk/carinsurance/search.asp) and search for Ibiza, the correct list for the GT, GTE, GTi & Cupra series are:

Model..................................Start Year...End Year.......Group........Engine
IBIZA GT.................................1993.............1995.............10.............1984cc
IBIZA GTE ..............................1994.............1994.............10..............1984cc
IBIZA GT 16V...........................1994.............1996.............12.............1781cc
IBIZA GTI................................1996.............1997.............10.............1984cc
IBIZA GTI 16V.........................1996.............1998.............14.............1984cc
IBIZA GTI CUPRA SPORT..........1997.............1999.............11.............1984cc
IBIZA GTI CUPRA SPORT 16V...1997.............1999.............14.............1984cc

So as you can see, the only one where the Cupra was in a higher group than its GT or GTi cousin was the 8v Cupra Sport.

This is based upon the ABI website, but obviously individual insurers can choose to interpret this anyway they want to.

doesn't make sense to me, as thats what parkers state? and i know there's somone on hear with a red gti 16 valve (non cupra sport) who was having a laught because he siad 'yeah that must be why my car is one of the only 150bhp cars thats insurance group 10' dunno who he is but i remember this debate coming up a while ago and defo remember him saying that. but it seems the ibiza range is a bit far fetched, i wish they could have just kept it simple. i hate insurance companies!

Weeeheee. I'm glad I bought an end of production 8v then. Has the same AFM, clocks etc as a cupra but is one insurance group less :).

I think from memory it was first registered November 1996. Not Far off as Cupra's probably started production about March time 1997

Parkers are not the most reliable source unfortunately, i have noticed when browsing for information at work they have got a few things wrong. All 2litre 16v's are group 14/15, 14 for Ibiza and 15 for the cordy (which baffles me as its a tiny bit slower). As seat have changed the model designations so many times its probably understandable that a few people got mixed up. For example the GTE became the 8v GTi and various other chops and changes
