Intermittent door locking fixed by fob battery change - why?

Afternoon all,
I've had the dreaded problem with a door starting to fail to unlock using the fob for the last couple of days, opens fine from the inside and then outside when unlocked until locked again. Front passenger side. I was resigned to having to do the WD40 fix when I saw one person fixed theirs by replacing the keyfob battery as it was low. I recalled that the car seemed to be getting slightly fussy to lock first button press for the last fortnight so I thought hey why not give it a try.

Well blow me if it hasn't actually fixed the unlocking issue. Not complaining but I really don't understand how this works, surely when the unlock signals received by the car - which it clearly is as the other doors unlocked fine every time - then from that point it's entirely down to the car to push the signal on.
Why would a weak battery fob cause issues for a single door lock module? Doesn't make any sense to me at all!
