Locking wheel nut key lost

That's why you need anti-anti-theft locking nuts :D

I have some that have a ring around the outside that just spins and spins around the actual nut, if you smash a socket on there, it'll just keep turning until you get bored, it'll never come off without the key :)

well jamjay sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the ones you have described are exactly the same as what i have just taken off!

You must have had to smash the ring off 1st, then smash a socket over the nut and remove? Double effort & double time.

Nothing is theft proof but you must have made a massive amount of noise doing it, something that most definitely would wake me up if it was happening on my driveway.

Yeah was very noisy i must admit but as far as double time and effort there wasn't none. I used a multi sided 17mm socket which smashed over the nut then squashed the ring and pushed it down the nut which in turn "bit" into the out. Took me nothing more than fifteen minutes at the most. But as you said noise was definately a bit factor!
