Took my 1.8t Cupra in for its MOT yesterday and as you might have guessed by the title it failed. The only reason for this is some cheap crappy bracket towards the back of the exhaust has fallen off.
My mechanic and mot tester is a close friend of mine and showed me where the bracket had fallen off - and then let me know that i'd need a whole new exhaust, even though my current one is perfectly healthy.
Has anyone had this problem before or maybe even found a solution for it? I really dont want to end up shelling out some £350 for a new exhaust when the failed part is 10p of cheap brackey.
Please let me know i'm off the road at the moment and i can't stand public transport...

Believe this is a common issue-happened to me twice. The first time the back box was replaced under warranty, the 2nd time was last year when out of warranty-fortunately a family friend who runs a garage sourced me an original back box at significantly cheaper costs than from a dealer.
If tis the same bracket that went on mine then you won't need the whole exhaust.Sure theres loads of info about the same issue on the forums.

One of my exhaust brackets snapped of it wasn't on the back box (silencer) itself but on the section going into it, my car passed it's mot last week without even a mention about the missing bracket.

Aaarghh.. :banghead2

Not what i needed right now.
Its only a 6 year old car it shouldn't need so much money spending on it to keep it on the road. And hearing that it has happened *twice* to you markoos doesn#t really give me much enthusiasm to buy another seat part.
Might just go for a milltek item as they come with a lifetime guarantee, save me a nasty shock in the future.

its a common failure and dealers etc will quote for a replacement exhaust. As they typically replace and not repair faulty parts.

However many people of this site and myself included have found garages that can repair these brackets for very little. So unless yours has broken in an unusual way then its repairable.
I appreciate the mechanic is a 'friend' but id say get someone else to take a look.

I was wondering about this. Any idea how they did it?
I was wondering if you could weld a little hanger where the old bracket used to be then just jubilee clip the exhaust back up snug to it?
However I have no real experience and dont know if it's even possible let alone if it'd work.
I'll have another search see if i can find anything.

Cheers

as long as it's secure and not likely to be subject to impending failure it should pass no problems

most people get em welded back on if it's still hanging there

Just spoke to another friend, a VAG specialist in nearby guildford.
He says he's seen it before many times and will just weld the bracket together again for £10 whole pounds.
I'm quite happy i dont have to pay the £200 to seat for a new exhaust when the design of it it clealy flawed.
I'm a lot happier that i'm saving that money though obviously. Means I wont have to sell my xbox and live on value-brand instant noodles (again).. Hooray!

Cheers for all the help folks you saved my bacon.

Don't know where but when I bought mine 4 years ago one of the brackets broke, my local garage fixed it with a jubilee clip and its been fine ever since

just take it to any garage/bodyshop with a welding license. i'm sure someone will mig something on in no time for not much dolla??

thouhg the mot only states there needs to be a secure mounting, i'm sure you can make up a bolt on bracket yourself?? or better yet... this is the perfect excuse to raid ebay for a second hand stainless system!

After seeing having another look under the car today at the state of the exhaust i have decided its probably in my best interest to buy a new one...
The rear bracket is totally missing and the one closer the cat is pretty destroyed. The only thing holding it is the little rod thingy that holds the backbox up to the very rear, just tucked under the bumper. Also, its blowing a bit on the sleeve bit that joins the pipes just behind the cat and is horribly deteriorated ie: you touch it it flakes off so sod keeping that.
As you might tell i'm not totally clued up on exhausts but i imagine what i need to go for is a cat back system and another sleeve to join it with. Does this sound right? Also could anyone recommend a good product to go for? I'd quite like the car to sound a little more throaty..

Cheers

ps: adrianmorris no it wasn't A&H are they any good?

not sure but id guess supplier or fitter would have any reducer needed to fit.

i have the miltek twin pipe and its very smart, suits the cut out in the bumper.

cat back will give a nice sound when you open her up but is refined otherwise.

youd need to replace the downpipe and cat with a sports cat/bigger DP to gain any power, which isnt cheap and youll only get around 10bhp from it... and it would ideally need a stage 2 remap to maximise the power.

To be fair to dealers alot of them (inc dealers I have worked at) are not allowed to weld exhausts back on so the only option is to replace. In theory to weld in a place of business you have to have certificate to do it and not everyone does. Also it depends on whats left of the bracket, sometimes they are corroded away so there is nothing left to weld.
