Occasionally no 1st gear when pulling away

Hey guys, been scrolling through this forum but can't seem to find anything directly similar and wonder if anyone has had the same before.

Have a 1.8 mk3 fr Leon manual and have only had it a couple of months.

Occasionally, when I pull up at a red light, and go to move 1st gear refuses to engage, untill I go into reverse first, then I can select. This maybe happens after 20/30 shifts going into 1st and generally doesn't have any correlation to the car being hot or cold. Whilst in gear and driving I don't have any issues selecting any other gear.

Any ideas what this could be?

Does it still happen if you leave it in neutral, lift up the clutch, push it back down again and then try to select 1st?

Yeah tried to do that before, no joy I'm afraid. Haven't tried doing that more than once.

Tried this again today and yeah 1st gear can be engaged on the second time
