Returning after a little holiday with VW

Hi guys

After writing off my gorgeous Black MK2 16v Cupra just before Christmas and not being able to find another I deviated off to a MK2 Golf and to be honest it's ok but it's no rally champ so it's up for sale and I'm going to get myself another Beeza but I'm not quite sure what approach yet...

I have 2 plans

Both include, Koni Coilovers, ARB's, Spacers, Braces, Polybushing throughout, Brembo's, leightweight Alloys & a few tasteful body mods but I can't decide on the base, it's either

1. be lazy and get a MK3 20vt so everything comes off the shelf & I won't need to spend hours and hours a week searching and tinkering (which is the other big reason for the old heave-ho to the Golf as I work in the city so get no time during the week) for parts but with less exclusivity & a much smaller trafic light suprise factor or...

2. If it's not going to be a major headache (as I mentioned not really flush with time) get a cheap MK2 and stick a 2.0 FSI MKV Golf Gti Engine and gearbox in.

I'm certainly swinging more towords the second option as I can style the car more motosport which is my thing & it's not a common conversion but if it's going to be a major hassle and/or expense then I'll have to give it a miss.

Basically boys and girls I'm looking to pick the brains of the engineers among you to see what would be involved in mounting the engine, will the gearbox fit (I have a feeling the answer will be bob hope) & most importantly is it possible to get the ECU & Electrics talking (i.e will I need to get QPE or alike to knock something up like their plug and play 20vt into a MK2 Golf job's).

I'm not a total retard when it comes to both the mechanical & Electrical side of cars so you can get a little techy, I know my big end bolt from my ECU but have hardly picked up a spanner in 6-7 years so will freely admit my recent hands on experience is about the same as Hanibal Lectors.

Any thought's on the engine conversion will be greatly appreciated.

Bloomin' 'eck! Has anyone done that to a mk2 ibiza yet?

I'd be tempted to try shoehorn the whole dash & electrics in, but the new golfs are pretty big in comparison....

I would go for the 2nd option because it would be completely different to what other people have done!!

If the gearbox wouldnt go in with the golf gti engine, couldnt you get a gearbox from another VAG motor that would fit!!

It could also probably be done!! Just alittle tweeking of the chassis here and there! But it would be amazing when it was done.

Well I'm hoping to find someone at Edition38 show who's done a Golf and pick their brains on the chassis mod's needed then will with the ECU i'm at a bit of a loss and hoping someone on here has the tech knowledge or can point me in the direction of a trustworthy specialist!

I really really want to try this fingers crossed it wont be the toughest conversion possible!

by the sound of things no :funk: which drives me even more!!!

to be honest I'm not going to go as far as Dash etc that's some serious work that I'd have to pay for as my measly skills only lie in the Mechanical arena, I'm not really aiming at a show car (another reason losing the Golf) as they take a serious amount of looking after and you can't drive it like you stole it or track them so back to a proper car for me!

I had thought the same about the Mk5 engine for my Cordoba. The problem is you will need the wiring loom, ecu, keys, clocks etc to make the engine run, and as they're still rare being broken the engines are difficult to get hold of.

I know it's going to be a tough one to find everything then no doubt a time consuming and costly process to get it in but the more I think about it the more I want to do it!

It's going to be a year at least before I can do the engine as I want to get the Chassis capeable first & as I claimed in Dec for twatting my last Ibiza need a years NCB so I don't get laughed at!

Really can't wait to pick up the new 8v cupra either now!!

will keep you up to date with any info & progress if you want?
