What could cause my car to stop?

My dad was using my car a while ago to get to work. Apparently he stopped at some traffic lights and the engine cut out and my couldn't get the car to start again. He called the AA who said that it was probably the engine and the car had to be towed home. Now the engine won't turn over at all.

My MOT has always been really good and the only problem I've ever had with my car (N REG btw) is having to replace the battery! (My car has an imobiliser and having it sitting on my driveway seems to drain it substancially.)

My dad reckons that it could be the starter motor, but then again it could be the engine? Any idea what the problem could be? And also, how easy/cheap would it be to fix? I've not taken it to a garage yet (partly because I can't get it there) and also because I'd like to fix it as cheaply as I can.

Now the engine won't turn over at all.

can you describe esactly what happens

dash lights?
interior lamp?
sounds?
etc

any little thing will help

Well maybe your battery has collapsed as that can happen, could'nt even bloody jump start mine when it went - totally dead.
