Improving the standard sound system

I'd like to improve the standard sound system I have in my FR and add a small under seat/in spare -wheel subwoofer (with amp built in).

Can anyone give any advice as to how this can be done? As far as I'm aware, you can't just install any sub due to the proprietary stereo.

Thanks.

Super, could you supply us with some how to please?

Sorry for the late reply. Only just seen this.

This sounds promising - does the head unit have the relevant connections at the back then? Can you control the sub via the head unit?

This was 19 months ago so bare with me. I have to remember through the photos I took.

This is a rca to speaker wire converter. You need this. As there are no rca ports on the back of the head unit:

I used the golf speaker wire guide to find which wires I need to cut and crimp together to connect my rca to speaker converter to:

I took the power from this spade connector which is located at the top left hand side of the fuse box behind the glove box. This is a permanent live:

I wired my rca cables through the car into the glovebox and plugged them into the converter. This provides sound to the amplifier & subwoofer:

This is the finished product in the boot. I couldn't find anywhere to ground it so I screwed a self tapper into the wall of the wheel well and that was my earth:

Unfortunately as this is an aftermarket unit, it cannot be controlled via the screen. My unit came with this remote which I did have by my knee but has done been moved to the 'secret' storage box below the headlight switch. It never gets used and isn't in my way:

Hope this helps. Any questions, just ask. I'll do my best to remember or come up with an answer.

Good write up Ckpearce91 :)
Whilst as you rightly said there are no rca out on the unit, or not like you would have on say a aftermarket head unit, It is possible to use the pins that would feed the factory sub from the connector block if you had one.
That way you can control a aftermarket sub using the infotainment screen like you would if you had the factory sub.

If it's useful to anyone, I'll have to look through my notes as to which pins it is, because you also have to reconfigure some of the speaker pins to make it work and then activate it using vcds or similar so it's comes up in the infotainment screen settings

I'll post up the details when I have time and also post the vag repair wire part number needed, which will give you the two pins you need for connecting into the plug in the glove box unit :)
