The LED will probably not have actually failed. The high level brake light has a strip of LED's soldered onto a small circuit board. I would suggest that the vibration from shutting the boot has caused a poor solder joint on one of the LED's to fail.
A soldering iron and a bit of skill will fix this but the dealers will probably not have a soldering iron so will just replace the part and throw the old one away.
