dammit... some ppl here say this noise is normal... and other say it can lead to a full breakdown... Im going back to Nurburgring next year and I have no intentions on getting hosed by the autobahn police. Who knows whats going on with the 3rd gear noise ?

I just broke down last night on the M40. I was accelarating down the slip road, went to change from 3rd to 4th and it jammed in 3rd. No matter which gear i select with the gear knob it remains in 3rd (including when in neutral position). Had to be recovered by a low loader. The RAC mech thinks it's either the selector or the synchromesch! My Cupra R is an 05 and has done 58k, and i'm wondering if this is also part of the same problem?

Well, looks like i've stumbled on something pretty important, ive just started noticing the EXACT same thing. I have an 04 Cupra R 225 and its only when im changing down to 3rd from 4th that it whines. How odd. Just thought i would add my bit in here. Mind you, my car also makes a grinding noise when i steer left or right going backwards or forwards, i have no idea what that is all about.

My car has only done 33k miles.

Talked with a transmission specialist today and they told me its a ball bearing thats gone. 100% sure when sound disappears when clutch is depressed. 1300-1500Euro fix....

Hi people. Sorry to resurect this post but i just been and looked at a 04 LCR and noticed this same problem. The guy had it from new and said it started making the noise about a year after he purchased it. He took it to Seat and they just said its normal so hes left it.
I have walked away from the car because of this problem:(

I serviced my car on Saturday at work. and changed my gear oil when i drained it, it was black been in there 60,000 miles never been changed and my 3rd gear whined on knock down from 4th,

refilled my box thru the reverse light sensor, which is just above the filler hole, left the overfill plug out till it started coming out and then tighten that up. then put an extra half a litre thru the reverse sensor hole.

tested it and at first didn't seem to make any difference but the more ive drove the car it dont make the noise as much any more. i can cog down at 50 mph into 3rd and no whine now.

just an idea if any 1 else wants to try and cheaper fix to see if it helps

mine does this. i have spoke to a gearbox specialist in northampton and they said they have done loads. they rekon that the main shaft bearing race in the gearbox starts to spin along with the bearing when it should stay fixed in the gearbox casing. this causes excess movement in the gearbox hence 3rd gear faults, also whining in other gears commenly 4th and 1st in over-run.
they rekon the fix from seat is a modified gearbox casing and bearing which is obviously going to be mega bucks but this place in northampton modifiy the casing to take a new bearing and bolt the race in to it cannot come free ever again. Costs £450 plus vat. im hoping to get mine done reletivley soon so will keep all posted.

Jamie 225 - have you had yours done yet? What is the name of the specialist? My box has the same problem and the main shaft bearing is the suspect... I'm looking for a specialist in or near Cheltenham to sort it out; Northampton isn't too far.

Was the £450+vat all in? or was there additional labour / parts on top?

not had done yet, should be done mid june. 450+vat was all in with me removing the gearbox and dropping off to them. will keep posted

Cheers!

Just wondering, anybody got a fix on whinning issue?

My LCR does the same..
Don't know if I should attempt a repair, some say "if it works don't fix it!".

I thought this wine was just a characteristic of the 6 speed box? i've been in other LCRs that make exactly the same noise......

i had my gearbox rebuilt as i mentioned above a few months back now. 3rd gear is now great, however i do still have a whine on over run below 30mph, i have been told that that is normal on most of these boxes though. i was thinking about putting a bottle of a wurth product that apparently cures some gearbox whines.
