Leon 1.5 DSG squeal on upshift from 3rd gear when warm

When the car is warm, it'll sometimes make a squeal on the upshift in 3rd gear, if I accelerate at a decent pace.

It's very short and only happens once on each upshift from 3rd gear.

I've been able to find a few threads on other forums, but the actual cause of the squeal seems to vary a bit.

The car has previously had problems with overreving on gear changes, but that problem seems to have gone away on its own, although it might have been replaced by this new problem.

Appreciate the reply.

It sounds less grindy in my case and isn't so loud it can be captured on video, but definitely something similar to my problem.

Does the noise increase in loudness over time as the problem worsens? Don't want to be stranded suddenly.

I have the same car and exactly the same issue, if you floor the car it tends to happen a lot, if you're driving slower it doesn't tend to do it as much. I sometime get a squeal in 1st when pulling away, but that's only when I do stop start traffic in the car. Took it to the dealer, who said the clutch was worn and wanted to rob me of £2,500, the car had 20,000 miles on it. It happens because there'e two clutches in the car, one for odd gears and one for even gears, the Seat mechanic told me that the clutches tend to fan against each other to cool down and sometimes this can cause a judder when pulling away and a noise. He reckoned that the odd gear clutch was worn and said basically its classed under wear and tear.

If the car starts to slip in gears then I'll take it to an independent garage for a new clutch, but at the moment it seems to be ok if I just don't go too fast with it. I don't think its going to leave you stranded but I know some garages can measure the thickness of the clutch plate with their software (Seat told me about it but wouldn't do it for me after I asked) so a specialist could do it for you if there's one near you.

Great knowledge, thank you.

The noise has increased in loudness over the last few days in my case, I'll update the post if anything new happens. Hopefully the car will simply slip under hard acceleration as a first warning.

Have you had a similar problem with overreving on the same clutch that squeals?

Not really with the over revving in all honesty, sometimes it’s done it but not a lot to be honest. I’d keep an eye on it, if it feels like it’s slipping a lot then I would take it somewhere, that’s what I am going to do with mine.
I do get sometimes a juddering in 1st gear but again that tends not to happen a great deal. I think it’s just a bad design of clutch in the car, the wet clutch is a better design overall.

So mine stayed the same for as long as I remember it happening.
But I got my clutch done under warranty luckily, believe it was the clutch plates.

Theres a bulletin on Erwin for the issue

The car has begun to be rough when going into gear from 3rd to 4th. It feels a similar way to being rough with the clutch in a manual car.

Hard to describe, but it's rough feeling, the car almost vibrates when it happens, and the car has addition lag engaging the gear properly. Impossible to record but it can be felt.

Do you get the car serviced at the main dealer at all? You could take it there but I would recommend a specialist of DSG boxes, dealer will blame the clutch and want to relieve you of £2,500!

Now I dont know if this is the exact TPI my car was repaired under as I didnt get any invoice or paperwork - Going to try get this next time Im by the dealer, as picked up my car out of hours due running late with traffic etc, which may be why I didnt get anything.
And where I saw the TPI number was when I was booking my car in prior to dropping it off, and I re-access it.

This TPI - 2044315/14 is what I grabbed off Erwin today thats specific to my car model after inputting VIN on Erwin.
I know some of the 1.5s the newer ones I believe, come with a wet clutch DQ381.
You'll have to check which ones yours comes with but I dont believe the squeal happens on DQ381.

Might be worth quoting that TPS when you next speak with them.

Or to be sure it or similar TPS/TSB exists for your car playing the £8 to access Erwin for an hour.
At least then you defo know it applies to your car or something exists.

Thanks very much for that, I’ll look into doing that, as my gearbox is the DQ200 so I know it’s one that has had issues in the past. The original poster of this thread might want to do this as well.
