Would be good to have a pic of this, see what it is. It may be there for a reason, i know that high speed fluid systems (fluid being a gas like air or a liquid) have anti-turbulance things that are designed to smooth out a swirling or turbulent flow so that the flow is less turbulent. ventilation systems often have these after the fan to remove the rotation the spinning fan induces in the air, or to
help the flow get round a bend.
This may be such a thing designed to smooth the flow of air down the pipe to the maf (air flow sensors are more accurate with smooth as opposed to turbulent air.
It may me nothing like what im thinking but you never know!
