Leon FR air box de- Restriction

I cracked open my air box today to look and see if there were any simple things I could do to de-restrict it. I came across a trellis type thingy stuck under the air filter, looks to me to be a bit restrictive so I removed it.

Any ideas if this will cause a problem?

Would be good to have a pic of this, see what it is. It may be there for a reason, i know that high speed fluid systems (fluid being a gas like air or a liquid) have anti-turbulance things that are designed to smooth out a swirling or turbulent flow so that the flow is less turbulent. ventilation systems often have these after the fan to remove the rotation the spinning fan induces in the air, or to help the flow get round a bend.

This may be such a thing designed to smooth the flow of air down the pipe to the maf (air flow sensors are more accurate with smooth as opposed to turbulent air.

It may me nothing like what im thinking but you never know!

I wil be leaving mine in, What stuart mentions seems to make sense.
If you didn`t need it then Seat would never have fitted it in the first place, they seem to penny pinch an awfull lot, just look at the sad battery cover? compared to vw, so it must be there for a reason.

I reckon if you were going for all out performance, as in trying to get your lap time down at a track then go ahead...

But as said, it must be there for a reason.

Pic of the part I'm talking about, it sits below the air filter and is the same size as the filter.

If it sits below the filter i.e. the filter blocking the airflow, then I would think it has bugger all to do with turbulence management. Take it out, if it makes no difference to performance/mpg etc leave it out.

Must be an FR TDi part as I cant recall seeing that on mine.

Definately an fr tdi part as I just been out to have a look at mine.Think also I will leave it in as it must be to help direct the airflow into the filter I reckon.Lifted it out easily though.
Also noticed a small oily residue on the square part towards the back of the filter on the top.Is this meant to happen in normal usage. My cars only covered 12.5k.

I'm sure Seat just put in for show seeing as its so obvious to the eye, I'm all for mods but surely a car manufacturer knows better than 99.9% of us on here. From what others have said it made absolutely no difference so why remove it?
