Limp Mode - Air Leak?

So I've got a strange and inconsistent problem with my 2013 FR 189 TDI. Currently on over 80K Miles, serviced as required.

Back in November I was speeding up towards 70MPH on a Dual Carriageway with no real urgency when I noticed the coil light flashing and the car would not rev past 2000RPM. I pulled over, reset it, it cleared and it happened again. On one occasion leading the Engine Management Light logging a fault. When I was nursing it back home, I noticed what felt like mini stalls, or stutters in the engine, very momentary.

I have a family friend who runs a independent VAG specialist, unfortunately he didn't have time to take it properly but the fault code reader (I can't remember what it was) suggested an Mass Air Leak?

I took it to another independent garage, they had it for a couple of days, investigated, drove it, couldn't actually replicate the problem, cleared the code, just charged me £20 for the time spend on it, fair enough. It was at the point of how far do you start stripping it all back.

Since then, I've strangely not had the problem again, I had it once in January, blinking coil light but not loss in performance, it just cleared. I've lost a bit of confidence in the car to go long distances or get up to speed, but I did take a decent drive up to Tamworth down the A5 for a good hour recently and got up to 70 as expected, that being said I've been avoiding going hard on it and haven't really gone above 2.5-3K RPM shifting up.

This week however, I don't what has been going on. 3 times at least where the coil light has started flashing and it has gone into limp mode, each time I can just clear it and carry on. I was planning a 2 hour trip up the Motorway up until that point this weekend, on my way home I thought I need to drive this a bit harder down a stretch and see what happens, as soon as I hit 3K RPM, Limp Mode, Engine Management Light (I've not a had a change to get it read yet or clear). The previous instances of flashing coil light did not leave an Engine Management Light on.

I know full well I can pull of the drive now and it will drive fine keeping below 3K RPM. But I had no idea what is going on with it.
I've been considering changing car for a while, I've had it about 8 years since 8K miles and I would love to run into the ground, but I'd ideally like to get another year out of it, that or sell it on (not privately) for someone else to deal with it. I can't say I have any interest in the MK4 (having had a MK1, MK2, MK2 Facelift and this MK3, all 2.0 Diesels, I hate the infotainment with a passion. With work only being 14 miles down the lanes away, I can hardly justify a diesel these days.

Anyway, any ideas? Having read through the forums, I've seen mention of faulty Mass Air Sensor, Stuck Veins on Turbo (turbo overboost?), a crack in a pipe, broken seal. Has anything I said perhaps suggest an obvious issue? I'm likely going to see if I can get it into an independent next week but I only have so much appetite for spending on money on an aging car.

Thanks all.

Based on the symptoms of happening at 3k, best guess would be turbo vanes, or boost leak, but could be lots of things. Modern cars are so complicated pretty much impossible to say without codes and live data
