I agree. The reason that guy did it in his golf 1.4TSI is because hes running a GT30+ turbo aiming for 500Hp. Obviously that is going to require some substantial air flow.

With the stock or even the LO270 you wont need anything as extreme as this and the gains would be negligible.

Most people seem to think that the supercharger operates all the way until 3500rpm when in reality it doesnt. It operates until the turbo is on boost then disengages completely and when logged i've seen that the supercharger disengaging on mine as early as 2500rpm as the turbo is already on song and on boost. This is why pulley upgrades and supercharger upgrades are pointless.

So consider when driving how likely you are to be in the 2500-3000rpm power band when driving spiritedly? Not very often id imagine, and in reality its not wise to go WOT at those sort of revs in higher gears as its not healthy for the transmission and clutches as you expose them to the peak torque for a prolonged period. Its better for your transmission and ultimately performance to change down a cog or two, use the power instead and protect your transmission.

Dosent say that the supercharger disengages as soon as turbo is on boost in that technical pdf. It talks of the changeover. By saying on boost do you mean 19psi where it stays until it tails off. (typical stage2 map) is the peak boost of 22psi all supercharger then without the turbo wastegate closed?

I was thinking along the lines of 1/4mile performance with this mod as like you said one wouldn't be in that rpm range often.

I think the way forward in tuning this engine isn't about power, if your aiming for 1/4 mile times, its about making the power you have as deliverable as possible and making things as efficient as possible. Im only aiming for 250.

I think it does, with some form of 'Viscous coupling' (hope I googled the correct translation).

I dont think our lil supercharger would enjoy going to crazy high rpm when the engine goes to 7k rpm. You would also hear it scream like mad if it didnt disengage.

Irrelevant of what the technical document states, the logs from my car at jabbasport showed the supercharger disengaging way earlier than 3500rpm. Same deal at APR hence it being pointless upgrading anything on it.

As for 1/4 mile you'll find that any work on the supercharger will most likely net you 0% benefit. Lets assume the supercharger runs all the way to 3500rpm (when in reality on my car it doesnt), and assuming you have 4 gear changes on the run up the strip changing at the redline each time. How many times will your car be in the superchargers area of the power band during that run? id wager only at the start line when you launch the car.

Plus having to much torque/boost low down in a fwd car will give you traction issues so any potential gains will most likely be wasted through poor traction. This is why cars like th FRS, Meganne RS, 3MPS etc have torque limiters in 1st and second gear because traction is more important than torque when launching a car.

In all honesty if your aiming for 250lbft you dont need any crazy mods in the first place. A stage 1 APR map will net you 250lbft, stage 3 will give you 270lbft and thats just with a normal VWR(ITG) induction kit, no special dual induction setups.

If thats all your after, why are you considering additional intakes for the supercharger?

I agree wit you, its about using the power. Mine makes about 260Hp at the moment without WMI and is running less boost thann stage 2 cars running the stock turbo. So less boost, more reliability/longevity and more power.

I wanted to get the most out of the low-mid range without increasing peak power, helping spool and reducing restriction. That's EXACTLY what I planned, keeping boost the same as stage 2, with a map which gets around the dsg cutting in but can take advantage of the hybrid to get the desired output. Thought I had dsg cutting boost and shortshifting but after a dyno, its 306nm which is under the limit of 350(thought it was 300 originally). So it must be down to the map holding torque back.


Spoke to Apr yesterday, they seen to thing stage 3 map is well from completion but I they couldn't contact Keith as ur was out of the country. Any news from you? What boost are you actually running?

Keith is in the know with the exact stage of the car and map development. Valve springs are being sorted and awaiting their delivery. I was running 1.43bar of boost

Do you know which valve springs your ordering? I got the spec from the guy with the 500bhp golf so would love to know the ones your going to use. Do they think that its 100% the valve springs. Apparently the ones We have are good for 400 bhp

+1, ill see what tsr say. Don't think there's any real benifit over 260 anyway if you want it to be tractable. its weird though as people have managed 300bhp easily without even touching internals, just a larger turbo and stage 2 mods. No misfiring either. Honestly believe knock sensors have something to do with it, I know people have turned them down.
