Strange noise on start-up (Cupra)

Hi folks,

wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem before and can shed any light on it for me.

Some mornings, my car makes a very strange noise when I start the engine. The problem is, it is very intermittant and the garage have not been able to pin point the fault.

The noise it makes is very hard to describe - almost like an electric motor, turning/adjusting something in the engine bay that sounds like it is rubbing. Its almost like a "whirring" sound but with maybe slight grinding thrown in (like i said... very hard to describe!). The noise normally lasts for about half-a-second to a second at most and then does not normally happen again for a few days.

There are no fault codes being thrown up, performance of the car all seems healthy, but the noise is a bit worrying.

As I said, I've not been able to figure out where the hell the noise is coming from but, taking a rough guess, it sounds like somewhere in the front nearside corner of the engine bay,

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers,
Graeme

not sure if the bezza's have 'em ... but the secondary air pump (think it's called), sits at the front/bottom/drivers side on a 180bhp Leon.

Also could be the power steering pump ....

Have got the same intermittent noise on mine, like a wheezing/grinding noise that last for a couple of minutes until the car warms up. Normally happens on cold start, noise is worrying. I've recently had to fix an oil pressure problem and had put it down to that but now that its fixed the noise is still there.

Finally got some answers from wheezing/grinding hoover type noise on cold starts, took ages to search nearly all the threads and quick phone call to seat confirmed common problem.

This noise comes from secondary air pump, a gap or crack in the pump will cause this horrible noise on start-up. This does not cause damage to the engine at all as the secondary air pump is used help reduce exhaust pollution gases on start-up when the engine is cold.

Also found diy remedy using this.... http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/thread/940861.aspx

Hope this helps others with the same problem [B)]

Mine does it now and again, same thing and its been doing it for about 3-4months. I was told it was the starter motor, but not had any issues with it so I wouldnt worry mate, it is kinda hard to describe, but your description fits mine although id prob say more creaky than grinding
