Tyres: Reinforced, Extra load, Load index ???????

My tyres are 215/55x16 and are a bit thin.

I'm looking around and am a bit confused about the different types. I think an Alhambra can use any tyre with a load index of 95 or over due the the weight of the vehicle. Am I right and are reinforced the same as extra load and tyres above 85 load index??

I wouldn't mind fitting some 17" mk5 golf or Audi wheels instead. What tyre would I need for a 17" rim on a 2000 mk2 Alhambra?

Thanks in advance.

if you get 17" wheels, then tyres that will give you the same overall diameter are 225/45X17. They need to be reinforced. These are fitted as standard to the stylance manual model

Am I right thinking Alhambras need a minumum load index of 95 meaning any tyre thats 95 or over is reinforced?

mine are - according to the official info (the flap on the fuel filler!) - 225/45x17 94W. That's reinforced. Tyre pressures for medium load are 42psi all round. They were standard fitment on the car. Personally would have preferred 16" for extra comfort!

So 94 and over. All the ones I like seem to have 91's on

tyres should be clearly marked 'reinforced' or 'extra load' as I had this query at MOT. Also has insurance implications . . . . I stuck 225/40 18's on mine and found Fuldas were best quality although all Tornado brand tyres are very cheap and reasonably good. Any decent tyre fitter should be able to advise - try www.alloywheels.com they have been great with my orders for the dealership.
