I think that I read somewhere that if you remove the MAF connector and the car seems smoother, then that means the MAF is u/s or needs a good clean out (cleaning out with contact fluid would be cheaper to do first off if removing the plug improves things). Other thing seems to be that this MAF connector or the MAF wiring connector pins can get contaminated - so removing refitting a few times can clean them up a bit - maybe try this first, then try leaving this connector off if that fails. If it is the connector that appeared to be the problem then cleaning both the male and females pins then stuffing in some contact grease might keep the connects better for longer. Good luck, as I've said, this lot is not my brain wave, its just something I've read in www.briskoda.net

Thanks very much mate, i heard this too from another member...but the problem is its running fine now so i wont be able to know what the problem is if i attempt taking it out and seeing if it runs better.

im going to do everything suggested as per in this thread...service, clean throttle body, injectors...then get it Vag commed AGAIN and see what it says this time...

my reacurring EPC light has come on again  its just like on thing after another!

Coil packs are always a good place to start - unbelievably the 1.2 will still run on 2 cylinders when a coilpack fails!

Symptons will be an extremely rough and erratic idle and a big power loss.

It's worth getting this looked at asap, as if a coilpack has failed, unburned fuel will be entering the catalytic converter - it's not recommended to drive like this or you could end up will a bill for a new cat - and they're not cheap!

i dont think its missing, but on idle it feels as if now and again its going to cut out. could this be the coil pack messing about?as soon as rev it up to about 1100 rpm it seems to clear.once you are moving it gose like stink! my mate code read it and it came up clear of any foults!!!!

They will often fail gradually before dying completly. Have seen this on at least 2 occasions on other people's cars. Normally the ECU will register a misfire.

i will have look at the coils again.when i did the timing chain i did notice that that only on of them appeard to be the original one.the other two looked a lot newer!i thought it would have registed as a missfire in the ecu as well.

well well well.got a new coil pack and tried it in all three plugs with no diffrence at all.so i rang a local vw specialist that i have delt with before.he said check compresions and you will find one is right down, his thoughts were the head would be scrap!!!!!!!!!!!!.checked the compresions today and found two at 225psi and one at 200psi.is that enough couse the trouble?put it all together and set of to go home and it felt worse than ever, infact it did two miles and elc came on and it seemed to lose throtle responce.took the engine cover off but i couldent see anything a miss.took it very steadyand managed to get it home.looks like a recovery job in the morning. WTF!

code read it today, missfire on number 2! replaced the coil and it seems ok.still seems a bit uneven on tickover.could this be down to the compression down on number 3?.still it drives mint so untill it gets worse i will leave it alone!

Whenever you get misfires and replace a coil, or coil pack its a good idea to take out the spark plugs and clean them.

Thats because the first faulty coil/s and misfire will cause the plugs to foul up, which can be bad enough to cause a misfire when you fit a new coil/s.

also, while cleaning the plugs, check they are in good condition, and also that they are the correct ones. i fitted expensive bosch three tipped ones which caused bad firing which went when i put normal ngk ones back in.
