What would you do? Rebuild or no?

Hi all,

As the title states, I will describe the situation I am in with my engine problems and I really would like your suggestions, ideas, tips and tricks on what to do, since my experience is limited.

VW EA113 2.0 tfsi engine CDL.

Currently car runs fine, but after you'll see described below, the engine is showing serious signs of wear and I am confused as to what is the best possible, most sensible solution for the car and myself financially in this situation. I am willing to spend some money, since I cannot keep driving the car like this, but also don't want to go overboard.

I am fond of the car, but of course everything has it's limits and I am not into spending thousands on it :(

Sit rep:

Stage 3 with all the bells and whistles - upgraded performance fuel system, intake, exhaust, huge turbo, clutch, etc., etc. These upgrades, futhermore, were done semi-recent ~15-20.000 miles ago or so.

Even though engine currently runs fine, it has around 160.000miles and the last oil + filter change was 700 miles ago. During that time, my mechanic inspected the bores and noticed signs of pistons starting to flip/turn over. He mentioned it's not hugely visible, but that I should be vary of a possible rebuild in the near future. Ok.. He did not inspect the oil well enough.

Today, we inspected the oil filter properly and found metal shavings. Not a huge quantity, but decently visible. Engine currently consumes about 1 ~quart/liter of oil per around 1200 miles let's say.

I want to make it reliable, don't plan any track days nor super heavy driving, just some dailying during warmer months and some spirited driving for at least a few years. Worst case, to last at least 5000 miles or so, let's say - 1 year of occasional driving.

Help:

I am writing this, since my experience with engines in general doesn't allow me to properly gauge the severity of the problem, of my situation in terms of what might need to be invested for it to run at least decent. Is it feasible at all?
Furthermore I am in complete confusion on how to move forward if it's serious enough, as I understand it. And how to do it in the most sensible way, meaning not spending thousands...

If I would say my budget is less than 2000 usd for parts, what do I do? Can I do something reasonable for less? If so, what?

Also, maybe I need to inspect this more, or the situation points towards catastrophic already?

Thank you sincerely.

I understand you're based in another country, and English isn't your first language, so I think something is lost in translation when you say:

my mechanic inspected the bores and noticed signs of pistons starting to flip/turn over.

That's not something that ever happens, maybe he's seen sign of damage to the piston crown?
Damage there would likely result from detonation, perhaps from a bad map or poor quality fuel?

You should do a compression test and a leakdown test, try to get some idea of what state the engine is in before thinking about pulling it apart.
