Cupra Vs Polo GTi

5ps or 2 bhp doesn't give a 0.5s difference in 0-60 times....maybe a 1 or 2 mph increase in top speed.

....And what's more a difference of just 2.8% in power output is well within the sort of variation you'd expect between engines that are nominally the same.

Also you can't say that a Polo or A1 is quicker than an Ibiza based on just one or two comparisons; you'd need to see several samples of each car before you could conclude anything at all.

I prefer the look of the Cupra over the GTI. The GTI just looks like a normal Polo with a different grill from the front.

Also the front end of the polo is very similar to the jetta/golf/passat.

Inside is nice but I don't think i could live with those seats.

Comments regarding the quicker 0-60 etc. The ibiza is probably the same as all MY11 have the battery in the boot similar to the GTI. So one could assume all the engine tweaks made have also been done, thus making it the same performance.

VW probably have a contract somewhere with Seat saying they cant update the Cupra specs. Who knows!

Well having drove both, i did feel the polo shifted a little quicker so maybe its got a different TCU Map to the Ibiza, that might explain how they managed to get slightly better fuel consumption and push it into the lower Tax band.

There is no difference, its just marketing.
In two tests here the Ibiza was actually faster here, I guess it just depends which tyres they come on and the state of the car, not every engine is the same also..

VW did the same with the Mk3 Golf GTI and The Mk2 Ibiza Cupra, same engine, the Golf had more weight but got quoted a lower 0-60 time. It is all about marketing. They wouldn't want their 'lower' brand (SEAT) outperforming their more expensive and prestige brands (VW and Audi)

I drove bnoth cars aswell when deciding which one I'd prefer. They drove identical IMO.

The interior of the Seat wasn't much different in terms of build quality and it also came better specced. The extra price VW wanted pushed me over the edge to Seat!

Interesting point you make about the battery position. We went and looked at a 10plate Boca and the battery was in the engine bay. My TDi has the battery in the boot which robs the boot of some depth.
So do all MY2011 Cupra's have the battery in the boot?

What's wrong with the seats in the GTi? In pictures they look well bolstered.

On the performance debate, I think I'd go for the marketing swerve. I mean the Polo is more expensive with less kit, I guess they need to make it look better at something to justify the price. IMO the Cupra looks better too, I just prefer the body styling of the SC with the flared rear haunches.

Yes - it's weight distribution. The 1.4 TSI is a very heavy engine with cast iron block and both turbocharger and supercharger.

Nothing wrong with the Polo seats, I just don't like the pattern on them :p

There is no difference between the Cupra and the Polo GTI in terms of performance. I agree with the previous posts about marketing being the driving force behind the differences.

I personally went for the Polo GTI over the Cupra based on the better interior and how it looks.

Nothing wrong with how the Polo looks [B)]

The GTI does look good but you also have a 5 door. Something which you can't have as a Cupra.

You also have different wheels and brakes.

here is a pic of my old polo

The front end is identical bar fogs and the grill.
