Warped Discs - Anyone else having same problem?

Hi,

I have a MK V Ibiza SC and my front brakes warped at 32K miles, I replaced the disc and pads with Mintex and the new discs have warped within 3 months. :censored:

My mates mrs had a MK V Ibiza too, and her front discs warped, they were replaced with genuine disc and pads and they warped about 6 months later too.

Searching the forum I cant see it is a common problem, but didn't know if anyone else had the same issues or if there is anything that could be causing this.

I've recently had my wheels re-furbed and they weren't balanced correctly, but I have had this fixed, but cant see how this would affect the disc (just including incase there is a link)

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hmm warped, I thought that was an Internet myth warping Steel would take some doing , are you sure what your experiencing isn't pad deposits on your discs?

No, never had/caused warped front discs on a Polo 9N 1.4 over 13years/105K miles or an Ibiza 6J 1.4 over 6 years/42K miles - I have replaced discs due to wear though, along with pads!

I've to change front discs on a Fiesta once because they cracked/broke prematurely though.

do you sit with your foot on the brake rather than using the handbrake? I've heard that can cause issues similar to 'warping' cos you create a hot spot on the disc. For example a motorway slip road with lights at the bottom?

Every couple of months I'll give my brakes a proper work out as part of an italian tune up. I've never had any warping issues. That was on the original discs and pads and then Pagid items when they were replaced.

When I replaced the original disks, the new ones warped in about 4000km.

They were replaced and now I've been more carefull with what Big_Col says and after 6000km they didn't warp yet

I do sit with foot on brake at end of dual carriageway most days. So this is what is causing the hot spots. Is there a way to fix this or new discs?

It comes down to cost, yes you could get your new but slightly warped discs skimmed, but why do that when replacing them is a lot cheaper?

Maybe think about changing your driving style a bit as I'll bet lots of people are travelling along busy motorways/dual carriageways with fast then stop/start driving - and can make their brakes last a reasonable time?

Thanks for the info will look at getting the discs replaced.
I wouldn't say I am agressive on the brakes but I do have a short drive on dual carriageway and the slip road is down hill and then I do sit with foot on brakes while waiting at the bottom so I will stop doing that.
Hopefully this stops it happening again :)

If you did this job yourself, did you make sure that the hub face was cleaned up and free of rust etc?
Also make sure that the wheel bearings are still okay (no free movement).
Finally I've now got used to using Pagid discs and pads from ECP, they are cheap enough and seem to be good enough quality - Mintex is the UK arm of the same group that Pagid are in, but sorry UK workers in Mintex, I've always found the kits short of something or the (rear) calliper mounting bolts are from an earlier era, and the look/feel of the pads is like someone made them in their shed, so I stick with Pagid and Textar - which is the third of that group of companies.

BTW, I would not think that your driving differs much from my daughter and she used her late 2009 Ibiza SC on that type of use - and the brakes lasted until I changed them due to overall wear.

I think mine are warping again and I've been very very carefull. I feel vibration on the pedal already but not on the steering wheel as the other time, at least for now.

What pads and discs are you using ?

It's more likely pad deposits on the discs, it's highly unlikely there warped

Ive never had warped disc on any of my Seats, however had one corner warp on a Skyline and a mate had a set warp on an old fiesta in a matter of weeks. So yes discs certainly can warp I suspect down to manufacture/material defect rather than hot spots. In both occasions discs were replaced with no further issues.

If you've managed to actually warp a cast iron disc well done.

Just read over this thread, when I'm on a dual carriageway/motorway and then slow down to around 20/30 my steering wheel shudders, is this something to worry about?

My car is almost a year old and has almost 13k miles on it, cheers

That's what we are talking about. When you break at high speed the steering wheel should not shudder.
If i does you have a problem, and from my experience it only gets worse.

Mines been like this for as long as I can remember, it's under warranty though and going in for a service soon so I'll just mention it

Is it more than the vibration you experience during normal driving?
