Washing and detailing Matte Paint Maintenance and Care on Your CUPRA

Matte paint finishes are increasingly popular across the CUPRA range, giving cars like the Formentor, Born, Terramar, Tavascan and Leon a distinctive, stealthy look. However, unlike gloss finishes, matte paint requires specific care to keep its unique texture and appearance. This guide explains how to maintain it properly, from cleaning and protection to common mistakes to avoid.

Why Matte Paint Needs Special Care​

Unlike gloss finishes, matte paint doesn’t have a smooth, reflective clear coat. Its slightly rough texture scatters light, giving the paint its flat, non-shiny look.

Because of this:

• You can’t polish or wax a matte surface — doing so will create shiny patches.
• Any abrasive cleaning can permanently alter the texture.
• Traditional paint sealants and scratch removers are unsuitable.

1. Washing Your Matte paint CUPRA​

Frequency: Ideally, every 1–2 weeks to prevent dirt build-up.

Step-by-Step​

1. Rinse thoroughly first with a pressure washer or hose to remove loose dirt and debris.
2. Use a dedicated matte paint shampoo, such as Meguiar’s Matte Finish Cleaner or Gtechniq W2, diluted according to the bottle's instructions.
3. Two-bucket method:
   • One bucket for clean, soapy water.
   • One for rinsing your wash mitt.
4. Use a microfibre wash mitt — never sponges or brushes.
5. Wash gently, panel by panel, from top to bottom.
6. Rinse immediately and dry using a soft microfibre drying towel or air blower.

Avoid automatic car washes or wash programmes with wax cycles, these will damage the matte finish.

2. Drying and Finishing​

• Use dedicated matte paint drying towels (thick microfibre) and dab rather than wipe to avoid streaks.
• If water spots remain, lightly mist with a matte finish detailer spray and wipe with a clean microfibre cloth.

3. Protection​

Traditional wax or ceramic coatings are too glossy, but you can still protect the finish using matte-safe sealants or coatings.

These provide UV protection, repel water, and make cleaning easier without altering the matte appearance.

4. Dealing with Bird Droppings and Contaminants​

Matte paint is more prone to staining because you can’t polish out marks.

If bird droppings, tree sap, or bug splatter occur:

1. Remove immediately, don’t let them bake on.
2. Soak a clean microfibre cloth with warm water or matte-safe quick detailer.
3. Lay it over the area for a few minutes to soften, then gently lift away.
4. Rinse and reapply a matte sealant if necessary.

Never rub aggressively — this can create glossy spots or thin the paint.
